I've been meaning to start a progress thread for a while but it wasn't until this evening and a text message from Mark (Quickstop) this evening that reminded me. I'll use this thread to update my progress and there will be plenty of pics...
First an introduction as you may not have seen my intro post. I'm Aaron, 32 and live in Hertfordshire, England. I had been searching for a Typhoon for 10+ years! but as you can imagine, they're very thin on the ground over here. After spending five years and countless thousands restoring a '60 VW Beetle that had spent the past 35 years in a barn in Northern Sweden into this,
my son came along and rendered it the most impractical, useless car going. It sat it my garage for a year until I finally decided to sell it. As fate would have it, a week after selling it, a '92 Ty popped up on eBay uk. It looked was honestly described and reasonably priced and was stock apart from a stainless exhaust. I didn't have my heart set on it as I really wanted a black Ty, but after seeing it in the flesh, I couldn't turn it down. A deal was done and this is what how I bought it:
Mechanically it was/is all sound, but just needed tidying up. It was missing the tailgate decals and had some strange reflective door decals, but a call to Stickerbomb sorted that.
I drive it around for a month or so until the plastic crossover tube spat a tiny chunk into the turbo and destroyed that
I rebuilt the turbo using a genuine kit from Mitsubishi and had it balanced professionally. It wasn't a particularly difficult job and I decided to do it myself after getting some ridiculous quotes and "GMC what?" responses to my enquiries. It also introduced me, feet first and sooner than I would've liked to the fickle nature of SyTy mechanicals. A new crossover tube was found and replaced the broken one
Whilst it was off the road, I decided to carry out a quick refurb of the wheels as the clear coat had failed and the centre cap inserts. From this:
To this:
I did the same thing to the wheels and they turned out pretty good
After a detail, it looked like this as of late last year
This year, I decided to carry out a service and replace the cap, rotor, wires, iac, filter, oil, trans fluid etc..
I also replaced the torsion bar mounts while I was at it.
One thing led to another and after finding a hole in one of my intercooler hard lines, and being inspired by some Sportmachines pics on Facebook, I carried out an underwood refurb. I cleaned the throttle body
Cleaned and painted the upper intake and intercooler tank. I used Eastwood aluma-blast and can't recommend it enough.
New intercooler lines were sourced from Sportmachines (coolest business cards ever)- thanks Tom! My old lines were full of corrosion and once out, more holes were found in them. I guess I caught them just in time. I know I should replace them using hose, but I want to keep this truck stock.
Next up was a wet sand to get rid of the orange peel. I used 2500 and 3000 grit, Meguiars 105 and Sonax Perfect finish to refine, leaving me with this:

This thread will be used to update my progress....comment/opinions welcome.
Thanks,
Aaron
