87 Buick Grand National.

METH HEAD
For the last few weeks I have been trying to set up a race with a guy I met at the track last year and we chat on the local racing forum here and there. He has been having problems with some knock over 12-13 psi. He usually runs 15-17 I believe. So he calls me Monday night and says hes got most of it worked out. His mods are...PTE 44, Aftermarket A2A, Meth, I want to say 3000stall but could be worng. Stock type tires. So we meet up at the "track" and line em up. His girl flagged while mine filmed. First race was pretty decent, I left with 12-13 and he ran me down with 2 cars inbetween. 2nd race was much better, I left with 13-14 and he ran me down with 1 car inbetween. 3rd race sucked I only left with 10 cause my brakes were trashed and wasnt holdong boost for shit. There was about 2 1/2 cars on that run. Cool guy though, I need to get faster I swear. Ive getting wooped lately. Ive aalso been stiocking to higher end type cars though. I wont race anyhtign moderate anymore. Just not worth the risk of grenading my propshaft.

Re: 87 Buick Grand National.

I'll race anything faster than about 14.5 second cause the slow cars are funnier on the videos. Makes me look fast. But my stock propshaft is already about to go-torn boot and bone dry.

if you are racing it knowing the propshaft is in this condition...you basically deserve it breaking and coming through the floorboard at you

Re: 87 Buick Grand National.

Most moded 86/87 GN's and T-types will be in the 11's and 12's with simple bolt-ons. Just check out the turbobuick.com web site under member listings. A ton of them in the 11's and 12's. Then check out their mods. A good number of them are in the mid 12's with stock turbo, stock heads, stock headers. Mods for the 12's include, chip, injectors, walbro pump, adjustable reg., air intake, tps adjustment, 3" down pipe, 3" exhaust, new valve springs, adjustable waste gate or boost controller.
The 11's: 60 series turbo, torque convertor, chip with 50# or 55#, alcohol injection or anything that takes away knock, maybe some porting.
We have not even touched the motor like cam, heads, headers, DFI, Accel.

Traction is not a huge problem when properly set up with the right tires and suspension.
Top speed is in the 140's before aerodynamics take over and slow you down.

So that's the skinny on the GN's in a nut shell. If your sy or ty does consistent low 12's or mid 11's then you can hang with the Gn's otherwise you get owned. :)

I know what GN's are and can do. They are impressive for being a little uglier than SYTY's. Still, by next summer I will ditch his ass.

Re: 87 Buick Grand National.

Well looks are in the eyes of the beholder but from a bang for the $$$ the turbo V6 is impressive as far as mods vs. $$$ vs. fuel economy for a 20 year old car. The technology behind the sfi was way ahead of its time.

Re: 87 Buick Grand National.

HP vs. $ goes hands down to the turbo dodges. I have less than $3,000 into mine, including a T2/A555 swap with a rebuilt motor. Gonna run mid 14's in the spring

I was in the high 12's on street et's with a 255 walbro, stock turbo ported, mease 3inch dp, black beautie wires, and a custom burned chip running 19psi in each gear. Traction from a 30 to 40mph just wasn't there.. but fun cars and easy to like you said get into the 12s on stock parts.

Less then $1000 gets the gn or t-type into the 12's.

I know you are including the cost of the car in your estimate I guess but GN's and t-types are worth more on the market unless you buy a beat up one and tune the engine etc. then the claim could be the same for GN and T-types.

Re: 87 Buick Grand National.

I love the way the GNs & T-Types look. We had a small syty meet here in MD last summer and went to a dyno day where there must have been about 30 or so GNs & T-Types I've gotta say they are some bad ass cars.

Yes, but we aren't talking about re-sale value, just bang for buck.

If are talking about just money invested to make a turbo dodge faster then a turbo buick you are saying that you have < $3000 into your dodge to run mid 14's and I'm saying that with < $1000 the 86/87 GN's can run mid 12's...I guess I do not understand the point you are making here.

I think he is including the car also... decent 86-87 GNs are still bringing $10k or more, really nice ones $15k+.
