8.5" rear question

Is it possible for there to be an 8.5" 3.42 4x4 non-zr2 axle that isn't the right one for the syclone? I talked to a junk yard, they said they have the axle as described above but they didn't know if it was from a v6 5spd. I'm waiting to hear back on the measurement, but I can't be sure this guy knows what he's doing based on our conversations.

I pulled one from a 2000 jimmy 4x4 2 door 5 speed. 3.42 posI, non zr2. Should bolt right in. Came with disc brakes too.

Right. I'm figuring that if it's a 4x4 8.5" with 3.42's non-zr2 it has to be the right axle but I don't know enough about it to be 100%. Since they couldn't confirm it was from a v6 5spd. I was hesitant

The tubes comming out of the center section should be notably larger in diameter than the rest of the tube. It will come out of the center section around 3" and step down to 2-3/4" or 2-5/8". Just going off memory. Ask for a pic I guess.

If it really is from a 4x4 non-ZR2 truck, it will be the correct width. Since it doesn't sound like you've laid eyes on it yet, the measurement will be the proof. Should be 59" from one wheel mounting surface to the other, if you didn't already know that dimension. Also, it would be good to get a photo of the axle tube into the center section, like JamieL said - some yards assume it's an 8.5" axle when it's really a 7.5". You haven't mentioned if it's a posi axle either.

I've also found this listing for a rear axle that's not too far from me. Haven't seen anyone mentioning whether or not the rear is a posi.

I wouldn't buy an axle just based off the yard's description. My understanding is there is no RPO code to identify that the truck came with an 8.5" axle - the factory just put them in as they saw fit. You have to know what to look for to be able to tell the difference between the 7.5"/7.625" and 8.5" axles. The best bet is to have them send pictures or look at it yourself.

Things to look for are the flared axle tube and also the lugs on the bottom. You can see the flared tube in the Photobucket photos from this axle for sale:

A 7.5"/7.625" axle also has pointed lugs on the bottom of the center section. An 8.5" axle has squared off lugs on the bottom. Take a look at post 26 on this link:

Re: 8.5" rear question

Does anyone know if the GMC Sonoma was offered with the 8.5" axle or just the s10?
