8.5" Rear End w/ Disk Brakes

What do you guys think???
I found this for sale locally and might pick it up.

-----------------------------------------------------
i have a 8.5" from a 02 blazer, non posi, 3.42, disc brakes, 60K miles.

the good: diff. it self works great. i'm no expert on them, but you can come by and take a look at it your self.

the bad: brake calipers need to be replace or need some work. the calipers do not slide on the pins. the right side wont budge at all the left takes some effort. both have uneven brake pad wear. missing right stabilizer bar end, but the stabilizer bar is kind of an extra so who can complain?

comes with everything in pics, except jack stands and concrete... you get the idea. but you can take all the dirt though

I would jump on it. -assuming the asking price is reasonable.

Those calipers are aluminum.-even if you don't use the rear, you should be able to swap the disc set up over to your posi rear.

You can buy a rebuild kit for the calipers if they need work.

-and a sway bar to boot!

Since its non-posi, thats not good for our trucks... Would need new gears in there or would the stock Ty swap over? Probably not since its 8.5 ....

The Tyclone would like a 8.5" but its got LS1 brakes already

FWIW, I got my 8.5 non-posi from a local pick n pull for $140, it has everything yours has. Of course, I had to pull it myself. Do you have any self serve yards in your area? Maybe check around, you can get them cheaper if you have the tools/know-how.

dosen't he need a 4wd rear axle to work... the 2wd axle is longer....

2wd is shorter, just change the offset of your wheels, the diff will actually be stronger as theres less rotational mas for the axles to snap under torsional load

Good point. So to use this I would need to wun the 2" adaptors just like on a 2wd.

Chris Keith, how did you hook up yours? Did you switch to posi?

swap the carrier, get a auburn pro or a eaton tru trac 30-400 figure another 100 to install it, I would go throught the diff anyways just to inspect it

So you are saying is...
$300 for the rear end.
$400 for the carrier
$100 for the swap
$80 for adaptors for the wheels
$880 +/-

and in the end I have a rear end that will never break with disk brakes on a stock typhoon.
