If I have a normal S10 700r4, can I rebuild it with syty parts? Say leave the gearing but put in the clutches, valve body and all that stuff? I would Imagine its not that different.

yup you can build a 700 to be as strong or stronger than a syty 700, all depends on what you wanna spend.

If you could still get a valvebody or separator plate. GM no longers makes either.

I can set you up with everything you need to convert a regular setup to as close to syty as you can get. You'll need to upgrade interior components to current standards if you want it to hold up at all.

George you seem to know the most about these trans on this site. I'm going to be pulling the trans this up coming weekend and hopefully will be rebuilding it the following, how do I tell if it is a syty trans or a regular one?

Re: 700r4 variations

the easiest way is to look at the seperator plate. it should have a "DT" or "GS" stamped into it and you should also see 2 grooves cut into the output shaft aft of the governor gear. those are the giveaways to a syty trans along with the casting numbers on the back of the case on the pass side pan rail. the seperator plates are still available thru GM as I've ordered and recieved several in the last week.

once you get it open you'll wanna look at the rear plantiary to see if it has the high speed oil slinger and the 2nd gear servo should be a vette servo if it's a syty trans. The VB has several specific springs that are color coded as well.

The things John listed are mostly correct. The output shaft with two rings cut into it will tell you that the output shaft came out of a syty. The servo is kinda tucked in there and really won't help you identify a syty because it is a REALLY common upgrade. Syty valvebodies had a "Hi" paint stamp on them. Unfortunately, as many have been rebuilt, a lot of these items won't tell you for sure anymore. The DT was in the sy's only. It was superceded by the GS plate. The GS plate will work in a trans that came with a DT plate. This part along with the governor and valvebody have not been available for some time. It's easy enough to make another plate match the oem syty plate though. It's tough because as time goes on, GM just isn't gonna keep making parts for them.

In all practicality though, it's not detrimental that you get a syty trans anymore. These transmissions are very old now and there are a LOT of things you can do, if you know what your doing, to make them live and perform better. An OEM syclone trans for example has several things in it that make it undesirable. The 3-4 clutches just don't live in them long enough for what most folks need them to do.

If you need to get ahold of me for anything all of my info is in the prime gears vender forum.
