If I installed a 4l80e without a shift controller would it work at all? I.E can I at least manually shift it or at least move it forward and reverse. My parents are getting tired of it sitting in there driveway and if it could at least move under its own power it would be helpful. The 4l80e that i am looking at buying includes the converter (2001 4x4 Silverado) will it work in a syty app or will I need a racing converter?
Thanks

Re: 4l80e Questions

I believe the trans defaults to 2nd gear when theres no tcu input . If you wanna save some loot , just get the full manual kit .

Yes it will default to 2nd, ok for moving around the driveway/garage but worthless to drive down the street.

Reverse will work fine.

The rossler manual controller is cheapest easist to get you going, you will have to do the shifting via switches though (setup on paddle shifter, floor, etc.). It doesn't stop you from adding computer later like the internal manual valve body conversion would.

Re: 4l80e Questions

Would I be able to easily install the computer after the tranny is in. Or would it require pulling the transmission out again? What about the factory torque converter? How would it perform or not perform in a typhoon?

another thing to consider is does it have s syty output shaft. trans has to come apart to have it installed.

Re: 4l80e Questions

Stock convertor is HEAVY, something like 80lbs. Truck would be slow with it but could be driven.

Computer is just a few plugs that plug in, no issues there. Again I would not DRIVE without the computer further than in./out of a garage. The line pressure will be defaulted to max also.

Re: 4l80e Questions

When you say factory converter, you mean the one that the 80E came with? A stock SyTy converter won't work in case you were thinking of that.

Re: 4l80e Questions

I meant the converter that came with the tranny. It looks like it was designed to be used running 6 bolts instead of three. Are the 6 holes just to be used on various applications.

Re: 4l80e Questions

The 6.0 I just put in my Wife's truck used all 6 holes. I dont think they will even line up with an "old" style 3 hole flex plate.

Like Jeff said, that converter weighs a ton, and i think it only stalls to like 1800 or so, so I really wouldnt bother putting it in there.
