Re: 4l80e Nats Results

Hey Guys...

Great results! I'm glad to see that the truck ran, and at the very least ran as well as before. Sounds like it ran better than it did with the 700, that the combination just works better.

Crimson made a good point, the 700R4 is well marketed, vs the 80E which isn't yet. And I don't think it'll change, because the 700R4 is keeping a bunch of transmission places in business. And the 80E is fairly expensive (due to limited production volume compared to the 60E). And for alot of applications, the 700R4 / 4L60E is a perfectly adequate solution (just not for a Sy, Ty or other high powered cars and trucks).

I am also shifting into OD around 90mph, as with his motor it likes to be loaded.

Kinda confused on the gearing, can you give us a rough idea of wot shift points for each gear?

From what I've seen the 700 has been so heavily marketed over the years that it's gonna be very hard for the 4L80E to be accepted no matter what people see it do. Track times and hard dyno numbers won't even convince people.

I’m not sure if you are talking about the syty community or the whole GM performance community. But it seems to me everyone around here has already accepted it as the solution to our transmission problems, the only downside is the cost.

.

Right now I am seeing a 1-2 around 4400

2-3 around 4300

3-4 i think 4300

1st gear last much longer though, as the final ratio is like 8.5:1 -vs- 700 being around 10:1

OD stretch is less also, being .75 gear, -vs- 700 with a .7

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I was wondering about mph

I only have memory now to look at not any recordered runs as someone else decided they needed my laptop more than I did.

2-3 was 64 if I remember

Again going from memory.

Naw, I meant the 700r4 in general as far as corvettes, camaros, s-10's, everything. It's been marketed to death. Some places, that is the only one they know how to build so they will absolutely slam anything else and give you 50 reasons why not to use anything else. If you use every performance part out there on the 700, you could easily spend over $4k building one. I've seen one vender in the archive, HHP, with guys spending $5K+ just for parts. Hopefully the 4L80E will catch on. Jeff has done a TON of work. Where most guys do it just to make their own work and then never share anything, Jeff has constantly answered questions and documented everything.

I just aquired my 4l80e last weekend and am ready to purchase the parts i need to get it in the truck. Does someone supply a complete "kit" to install it? I know i need the transfer case adapter and output shaft and obviously have to modify the crossmember. What converter are you using? I found a couple options in a 10inch @3000 stall w/ lockup. thats what id like to have. i am still looking at prices for controllers. they are $$ thats for sure. makes going full manual tempting. any info would be greatly appreciated as id like to have this done by the end of july.

Hey "Try Me"

There's a thread in the "Parts for Sale" section on 4L80E kits (complete kits, including adapter parts, xmember, and some other bits & pieces you'll need). Its a couple of weeks old, so it may be on the 2nd or 3rd page. Look for it.

JS Manufacturing is who is building the parts & pieces. I think Turbotime is handling the sales end of things. Either way, get in contact with those guys, and you should be able to figure out the whole shebang.

And from the sounds of it, Jeff (JSManufacturing) has a GM controller fairly well figured out, so don't panic now. The PCM control is a big advantage. Allows you to run really hard fast shifts when you're hard on the throttle, but have fairly soft ones when you're just cruising around (instead of having the thing knock your fillings out). And allows for adjustability without having to get covered in ATF (nice advantage, ain't it?).

JS has some convertors available. You might also check out the truck section of LS1Tech.com, I know some of those guys are running turbos and 80E's. I think Precision Industries (according to what I've read) has built some pretty decent 80E Turbo convertors.

Like just mentioned, look in for sale section.

Call Eric at turbotime for more details, etc.
