George, you know better it is a great marketing tool for some to advertise the 80e is a slug, takes more power, etc.

I think we found out another disadvantage though with Jeremy's truck. We just got back from the track, and it seems Jeremy has a new hobby of doing AWD burnouts.

Tonight I actually saw his front right tire lift for just a split second. New best 60ft of 1.60

Yep, that first gear is really hurting us.

Re: 4L80E disadvantages?

For those who have done the 4l80e swap, how much did it end up costing in the end? The more I think about it, the more I want to go with a 4l80 vs another 700, since I have thought about supercharging the V8 in the future:2cents:

Re: 4L80E disadvantages?

I would say typical install will be ~$4k-5k

$1200 conversion kit
$1000 convertor
Leaves you enough for controller, trans, rebuild.

It sounds expensive, ok it is expensive. BUT the majority of the cost is converting. If you should break it after that, your looking at super cheap fixes.

The tranny itself isn't much of the cost, it is all the conversion pieces (computer, kit, convertor, etc.)

150 for used trans.
200 for rebuild kit.
~150 for TransGo shift kit.
~150 for misc trans do dads (short shaft for shift cable, fluid, AN cooler line fittings, etc).
600 for control.
1K for TC.
~300 for gilbert front drive shaft.
Whatever the J&S adaptor/output shaft cost me (dont recall right off).

Free/DIY stuff if youre a cheap skate like me:
Shortened the rear drive shaft myself for free (no, it doesnt vibrate).
Rebuilt the trans myself.
Built my own x member from the J&S pieces I got a while back (needs to be tweaked...I obviously cant read a measuring tape  ).

As happy as I am with how the trans is performing Id pay double what I have in it if I had to do it all over again. Only thing I can even remotely complain about is I notice the extra couple hundred RPM in OD and it bothers me....I may switch to 3:23 gears later on but thats a HUGE "if". I may just leave it as is since I average less than 1k miles on my truck per year.

It's just a six

Only a Local 1/8 mile track. We were testing some new stuff for next year. I ran a 7.64 compared to the 7.54 when I ran the 11.9, but I was only running 16 psi of boost:lol: and lower timing . Needless to say there is plenty left and the new stuff is showing promise. Also the track starting line was exceptional today, to my surprise.

2.75 is stock gearset in some rv's. :D
Kilgore offers 3.00 first gearsets, but they aren't going to last as long.
The incorrect gear code can be eliminated in late model gm ecms.

Rolls Royce ran 80's in some of their higher hp autos.
