Has anybody swapped out for a 4L80?....

Funny thing about the above statement.
everyone = ed hess?![]()
in the really fast trucks? I nver really considered my truck as fast. but excuse me while I get cocky and take that as a compliment.
one other point and i will get back on topic.
ya know it will be 2 years ago this coming july when after 13 years of ownership i took my 100k mile sy to the track and ran a whopping 14.4.
so anyway getting back on topic.
guess i can speak with some authority here since i did the 1st 400 around here and actually kept the AWD.
Only 2 peeps have done the 4l80.
robert in sweden and the other guy (cant recall his name)
IN my case it was a matter of the trans shop haveng the exepertise to take the job on as a one of a kind (carl rossler did mine). spend the time and do the research comparing output shafts from the various manufactures of output shafts availalbe that could match up to the systy transfer case.
I beleive the guy in chicago that did his used a 2wd/4wd selectable case. not an oem systy transfer case. I dont know if robert used a syty case.
Otherwise the install of it would be pretty straightforward as my tech write up in the tech section. differences might be floor clearance and lenght of pad off the rear mount. shaft lenght changes will vary also, then again you will have to program the unit.
oh and the cost is also 2x the 400 conversion cost.

the output shaft on a 4l80 is not the same as a thm400!
4l80 i beleive is longer than a 400
MY setup uses the thm400.

Ed,
I know youre running a 400 but what Im after is what type 400 output shaft are you using? As in: Length (short or long shaft)? Spline count? Is it a stock GM part or custom made? The adaptor to bolt the xfer case up is no big deal but the output shaft is.
Worse case scenario is I can yank the drive shaft on the dually and measure the output shaft on it since its got a 80e but Id rather not since its a 2wd and takes a shoe horn and KY to fit it in my garage.

Truck Master Conversion Kits
TCI offers many different types of conversion kits to owners of General Motors vehicles to enable interchange of various styles of GM transmissions. This is particularly useful for heavy load vehicles that may benefit from a heavier duty transmission for dependability. All kits provide the necessary adapter plate, output shaft and hardware required for installation. The TCI 329900 kit also contains dust cover, dipstick, detent cable and replacement shift indicators. Kits will require some degree of drive line modifications.
