4L60E help? George?

Hello...

I knew I was on limited time with this transmission in the 98 Jimmy. I just got done doing the turbo setup in it. It's been doing great. 200miles on it so far... it's darn fun!

Anyhow... Was driving home and came down to a stoplight..... went to take off as normal.. not even getting on it... 1st gear.. .2nd gear...... 2nd gear still....... humm...

Turned down the radio... it wouldn't go into 3'd? Just stayed in 2nd.

Let it cool down here at home... just drove it again. Same thing.. fluid is good.. .does not smell like burnt dog hair or anything and looks clean...?

Anything that would cause that to happen? Electronic?

I'm clueless on Transmissions...

Thanks for anyhelp!

Weird, maybe you will get lucky and it will be something stupid like a stuck solenoid. Do you have a scan tool for that thing yet? Is the ECM trying to command 3rd?

really get on it in second and accelerate and see if you can skip 3rd and get to 4th. that will tell you if the 3-4 clutchs are good. and if you have a contorl problem.

Re: 4L60E help? George?

I made it back to the shop this morning... still no 3'd. I think I can feel the TCC lock up in 2nd but nothing past that. Definatly no 4th. Nothing has changed on the trans/connector ect.
It's somthing electrical (inside) or like you said 3-4 stuff.
It's got 140,00mi on the trans. I've changed the fluid/filter several times but that's about it.

It's proably time for a build anyhow.
I'll take it out in the next few days and get it up to my trans guy.
It is a 1998 GMC Jimmy 4dr 4x4 (now turbo)
Thanks for all the suggestions! Hope it's not super scrambled inside! DOH>

Re: 4L60E help? George?

I'm 99% sure it's the 3/4 clutch.

I poped the pan off... some stuff on the magnet but not bad... I checked both "A and B" soloniods and they both worked fine with 12V.
Put new fluid in it but had the same result... I could feel where it "should" have went into 3d but it couldn't do it.
I'll be pulling it here in the next week to be built to 4L65E spec's.
Thanks for the info guys!

no 3rd or 4th means 3-4 clutchs are gone. common problem with stock trannies.

Re: 4L60E help? George?

Must be the year of transmission issuse for us.

The used transmission I got for the Camaro works great but the converter is too tight. I need to pull that and have it re-stalled
The Typhoon trans works ok but under power it does not shift firm. (have a built trans ready to go in)
The Jimmy looses 3-4 after 200mi of boosted driving
I think my Maxima clutch is slipping again :( She'll make it through the winter... but it's a constant problem with the car. I think I caused this one to go doing somthing stupid..... I wish it was racing but it wasn't.
Man... I've got my work cutout for me Lol.
Thanks for the help and advice on this one... I got no problems pulling them out but building them.. I'll leave that to a Pro.

Re: 4L60E help? George?

Put the transmission back in Saturday...... All that was wrong with the 4L60E was a small brass bushing got blown/pushed out of the 3/4 shell. (where the input shaft is attatched to)

I had the guy put the TCI "Best Kit" for the build. I'm happy with the firm shifts and shift points.
Thought I'd let you guys know what was the problem if you happen to run into the same situation.

The little check ball/ air bleed that would cuase it for sure  no fluid to apply clutch

Always good to follow up IMO
