4.000 piston help!!

srocket24

What turbo?
I'm having a hard time figuring out what pistons to buy without boring my block, or skimming the pistons. I was told I can use normal 4.3 z code pistons, but after doing alot of research on syty sites, everyone is talking about low compression pistons. I've tried summit racing, jegs, northern auto, jc whitney and spent hours on the phone talking to customer services and no one has any idea or options for me. Does anyone know where I can get 4.000 pistons for my 92 typhoon besides sytyperformance.com? or atleast the part #? thanks!

I retract my JE comment...I think the GM number is the right one.

Re: 4.000 piston help!!

have you had the block checked? I doubt you will be able to use the block as cast odds are it will need a little clean up unless its a virgin block

Re: 4.000 piston help!!

I purchased a brand-new GM short block in 2003 for my build. I threw away the stock rods and flat-tops. I then purchased the SP 2441 pistons that were in vogue for so many years. I ended up purchasing 4.00 pistons from three different sources around the country. NO ONE had 6 std bore 2441's back in 2003. They only had 'broken sets'. It stands to reason that these are unobtainable 8 years later. Think about it. Who uses standard bore pistons other than the OEMs when they build a brand-new engine for a brand new car? There's just no demand for std bore replacement pistons for an engine (4.3 and 5.7) that has been out of production for 10 years.

I've since read (don't remember the source now) that SealedPower has discontinued the std bore pistons in their line-up.

Your options are going to be used stockers, a custom-built piston, or bore it .030 and use an available part.

Yep. Vintage has 17 of them. If you want to build 3 engines, the third one will be a 5-cyl, I guess.

First off, these stock pistons are used with pressed-pin rods. If you want to go the Eagle rods route, these pistons won't work without machining pin retainer grooves in the pin bores. Expensive.

Second thing. My parts fiche shows a list price of $112 EACH in 2001. My guess is that vintage price will be close to $200 each. You may be able to get them, but you're going to spend about 1,500 for them, and to modify them for use with Eagle rods.

Not worth it, IMO. Bore your block and use a $300 set of pistons.

What do you mean by "out of production"? You can still buy a new Silverado with a 4.3L Wouldn't that mean they're still in production? They cant be using surplus engines from 10+ years ago, can they?

Those would be too high of compression for what he wants if I understood his original request correctly

Re: 4.000 piston help!!

I would stay as small a bore as possible. with that being said, i went 4.020 on mine. your pushing boost, you don't "need" displacement.

Those would be higher compresion, non-boosted and possibly diferent because of being balance shaft motors since 94-95 and up.

My input for origanal poster, you really should clean up or bore .020-.030 and could use some cheaper TRW forged piston and L35 rods or if you can swing it, eagles. Those would be decent upgrades over stock also.

Re: 4.000 piston help!!

If anyone has a broken set I have been looking for a single 4.0 TRW L2441 piston for a while.

Thanks,

:dunno: What Dave was most likely saying is the following. People that are into cars or have connections within the industry know that by law a manufacturer only has to supply parts for 10 years. Even if the same parts were used on other models (ie Syclone, Typhoon pistons).

Now knowing this you can understand why the "out of production" year would be 2001 for the Syclone/Typhoon pistons. By the way the out of production applies to every part on the truck. Anytime after the 10 year mark the manufacturer can close out or discontinued any and all parts if they want. We are lucky that GM and many other manufacturers sends the remaining parts to Vintage (Right now they show a grand total of 16 Syclone/Typhoon pistons) in stock.

It is for this same reason that I cannot get a replacement door panel for 1 of my cars. It was made in 2001 and didn't go out of production until after the 2005 model year. By the way even though you can get a 2013 Silverado with a 4.3L. There are no parts on the motor that were in use on the Syclone/Typhoon engine. I'm not saying they won't fit, I'm saying that as built there are no parts that were use on them.

Then wouldn't the "out of production" year be 2003 since they made the Typhoon thru 1993?
