1992 TY#0073 back in business

Well, I am finally driving my Ty on a regular basis again. Started driving it again about 2 weeks ago. I went out and took some pics of it today, here they are

Now before anyone says I need some tire shine, I know I know, they look like I rolled through poo. As of now the situation is this, I am stuck with a stock stall TC until I can figure out what to about my TC situation. It takes a LONG time to spool let me tell you. The truck has a 67gtq, fully built motor with Vortec heads, 80e trans, alky injection and some custom grind cam I got from Mr Gerber. At the moment I am running 8-9psi and can not even launch the truck but once it gets going it feels damn good.

Here is a vid I took today. I did a little blast and what sucks is that right now I pose boost on the shifts, the truck is no where near dialed in but this was enough to take down a new stock EVO.

I dont know why it is sideways, drives me nuts

All that is left is the tail gate will be repainted some straightening of the front bumper is in order and some obvious mechanical issues. Once I get get my tach to work I will start doing some serious tuning.

Looking good!

Yep, been missing the kill stories also.

What stall do you need & what are the specs on the cam? What is the A/R on the turbine housing & what trim wheel for the turbine?

Looks really good mate.

What stall is in it at the moment?

Are you going to change up the shift points in the 80e?

Re: 1992 TY#0073 back in business

Thanks guys!! I have worked hard on this and truthfully I came to a point where I thought about ditching it for a stock truck. Glad I didn't because it is a blast to drive, sounds phenomenal looks bad ass and is just plain and simple.......my baby.

To answer the questions, it needs a 3600 stall. I plan on leaving shift points where they are until the truck gets running better. I have barely done anything tuning wise, just really getting the boost/alky controller dialed enough so I can beat on it. Truthfully, the tune is VERY close to where I left it.

As far as cam specs go, I would have to dig up the card John sent me, I know it has a 500 lift but don't remember the rest of it. It has a pte exh housing .85 a/r. As for trims and all that I have no idea, what ever the 67gtq came with.

Next project is to get the brakes and disc brake rear end I bought put in. After that, I will be doing interior. I am hoping to start the interior next summer. Then some new wheels and a turbo big enough to get me in to the low elevens up here. High 10's with any luck. I think I have the motor for it, is STRONG!

Why did you put a 1600 stall in? Apart from being laggy, how does that feel? Very responsive?

Basically I buy my converters from a local guy. This is the first 9.5" he has ever done for an 80e. When I got the truck back together it would make this awful screeching sound when I put it in gear. I took the converter out and gave it back to him to make sure it was ok. During those few days I tore the 80e down and rebuilt it. I got the converter back put it all back together and it still made the noise. I brought it down to him so he could hear it and he got this oh shit look on his face, he told me to take it back out and he would look at it again and he gave me a stock 80e converter to see if the noise goes away. Well we put that in and the noise went away.

So I gave the converter back again and got it back from him last week. He said nothing was wrong with it. So The other night my brother was over and we were looking at the converter on the bench and we noticed this squiggly metal shaving inside. I fished it out with my magnet tool its about an inch long and looks like it may be from when he cut it open. I don't believe he opened it back up so I can't decide if I should even waste my time putting it back in to see if the noise is gone or just buy elsewhere and hopefully get some of my money back.

Yep, I would give up on the guy at this point. Sounds like it should be his last convertor also.

Re: 1992 TY#0073 back in business

I ordered a 3600 stall from TCS yesterday, I have heard nothing but good things about them and the price is fair IMO. Last night I went out and tried to find out what was up with the way it was shifting. Looks like we are shifting waaay early. 4200 out of first and then 3600 out of second. If this is because of lock up like Dave suggested I'll have to try and fix it. Otherwise, I am just going to wait til my new converter gets here and give that a shot.

The bin you have will control that. One option we did on jeremy's sy is let the syty ecm control lockup, other computer only controls shift points. It worked out well for him.
