1/4 Tank of fuel and starvation under boosted launch

Is there a fix for this? It's really annoying every time I run into something worth racing and my truck does the jerky jerk through the intersection as it starves for fuel. Seems like this always happens at a 1/4 tank or less. I suppose I'll either need to change fuel tanks or just keep the level at 1/2 or higher. Obviously, PAS didn't take fuel tank design into consideration when they engineered a truck that goes 0-60 under 5 seconds...argh.

You can add a bafffle to the tank to prevent slosh, or have it sumped at the back.

Common problem been covered many times.
Easy fix, keep 1/2 tank of fuel in it at all times.

Yes...I would say sump the tank or keep it at least 1/2 full.

The sy tank has a plastic slosh tank of sorts in it, just not big enough to really help. The problem is the outlet is midpoint on the tank.

Sumping it is about the only way I see to do it correctly.

I hate doing this.. which is why I havent raced a few people around here. They'll catch me on a day where I'm trying to save some gas, and are about at a 1/4 tank. I've only done it twice. Because I dont want to hurt anything.

This is a good way to toast your motor. Don't always count on your ECM to save the motor.

I never run hard with less than a 1/3 tank of gas.

I have it happen all the time. For now, I will just keep the tank 1/2 full or higher or not do boosted launches when it's lower. I wanted to be sure this is normal on our trucks.

I went with a 13 gallon tank and also compressed(rubber hammer) the sides a little so i only get about 11.5 in there but i have run it almost dry and not had a slosh problem with it yet.

Hey Adam was that you at Savers last night? I spotted a nice looking Sy in the parking lot, and it had the same wheels as yours. It was dark and I couldn't tell for sure. Hope you got it home before the snow hit.

I just wonder what whould it do if one added a peice of hose to the pump and extended the pickup to the bottom of the tankand left it long enuogh to be able to move across the bottom of the tank so it could stay in the fuel to pick it up? Has any one ever checked the fuel pressure on thier sy/ty while this is happening if so was it low I know the Focus has this problum and it is cuzed by the fuel pump being weak enough not to be able to support the engine during cornering or hard accellaration. This is just some idea's I have that might help.

Re: 1/4 Tank of fuel and starvation under boosted launch

Yeah this is a very old service bullitan about this, its becaue you have lowered the back of the truck. Id just keep it at a 1/2 tank or higher all the time, which sucks, cause then your at the dam pumps all the time, or sump it, i have my stock Ty tank sumped with an external aeromotive a1000 pump and i dont get any fuel cut, unless the tank is completely dry.

well, when i swapped my FP, it could see the intake of the pump was hitting trough the filter, when i put in the new one, i kept bending it, so it wasn't as close to the bottem as it was.
not saying i would run a 1/4 mile at WOT, but just am asking myself that the FP isn't starving itself because it's so close to the bottem causing a small tornado inside the tank

Re: 1/4 Tank of fuel and starvation under boosted launch

So I leave work to grab some lunch today and, low and behold, my co-worker is behind me at the light in his C6 Z51 Vette with a big grin on his face. We've been talking smack to each other for some time and we plan on going to the track together. I've also driven his car and he's ridden in the Sy. So light goes green, I make the left turn and punch it. The damn truck bucked and a bunch of black smoke came out of the pipe...the damn thing did it again..argh! I went straight to the gas station and filled it up with $40 of 91. I'm definitely not doing to run it lower than 1/2 anymore. I swear, everytime my tank is that low, I have a chance to run something.

We joked about it after lunch and he said he didn't even notice my truck buck/hesitate for a split second. He thinks the Sy would take him cause he can't get any traction in that Vette. We plan on going to the track very soon, either Infineon or Sacramento. I also let him borrow my G-Tech Pro, so the 0-60 times he gets with it should tell me what I need to know.

Is there a way to sump the tank and keep the intank pump ? I tried looking for a 13 gallon but they are hard to find .

You could Also try putting some RCI fuel cell foam in the tank to help stop slosh.

Only thing I could see doing is to cut the pump hanger section out and relocate it further back in the tank. Best would be to buy a new tank to do the welding so you can keep your eyebrows. Be a lot of work, and tank would need opened up to remove the plastic tray inside.

On one truck I removed the back 8" of the tank. Not sure yet on slosh, but obviously tank volume is reduced. Slosh should be better though.

Re: 1/4 Tank of fuel and starvation under boosted launch

I would just sump it and run an external pump, it will have alot more volme than the intank unit and you will nerver have to worry about not having enough fuel pump, and on mine the A1000 is can barely be heard once the truck is running and isnt that bad when the truck is off, not nearly as bad as i had thought it was going to be.

I do like the fuel cell foam idea, just wonder how hard that would be to install thru the stock tank opening? And i wouldnt think you would have to completley fill the tank to notice a differacne, maybe only theback half of it?

Might also be easier if you bought a new tank and cut the top off it to make sure the foam goes in correctly and then just weld the top back on? Does the Ty stock tank have internal baffling? When i get low on fuel i do notice the stock guage moves around alot and the gas is probably sloshing around, but with the sump i dont get any feed problems. Ive thought about upgrading to a fuel cell, but i dont want to mount it in the bck of the Ty and make the cargo areas compeltly useless, and i havent found a good way to mount in under the truck and still be able to get fuel in the fuel cell.
