I have an '01 S10 (RWD, mostly stock 4.3L and 4L60e)

I have the following upgrades installed.

  • Fel-Pro Permatorque® Severe Duty® Head Gasket set (HST9354PT6)
  • Port matched Vortec heads (9.4:1 CR)
  • ARP head studs
  • Extra Duty (High Flow) water pump
  • Hydroboost Power steering pump and booster (dual return lines on pump)
  • 13" Corvette front brakes and 12" Camaro rear brakes
  • 140 amp alternator
  • MSD Blaster 2 coil and 8.5mm wires
  • Accel Cap and Rotor (brass)
  • OBX stainless steel headers
  • Borg Warner SFI spider upgrade (with adjustable FP regulator)
  • 255 LPH fuel pump
  • 8.5" rear differential w/ 3.08:1 gears and Eaton TrueTrac
  • Royal Purple 5w30 oil, 75w90 gear lube, Max ATF and Purple Ice
  • LS1 electric fans (mechanically controlled via thermoswitch and relays)
  • EGR deleted
  • CFM tech throttle plate (removed half moon piece from rear of throttle plate)

I have already purchased the following

  • MSD 6AL2 programmable with boost sensing
  • MagnaFlow dual 2.25" in/single 3" out SS cat with bung (for 2.25" Y pipe)
  • GlowShift Wideband O2, Fuel Pressure and Boost Gauges
  • MagnaFlow single 3" in/Dual 2" out SS muffler

I am still planning on these upgrades
  • Meilling Extra Duty oil pump (25% more flow)
  • remote mount turbo
  • dual remote oil filters (Royal Purple filters before and after the turbo)
  • oil coolers (possibly 2, fore/aft of the turbo)
  • power steering cooler
  • intercooler

That being said, can I please get some feedback from the turbo gurus out there on suggestions for a turbo, intercooler and anthing else I may have missed or comments about by current or future parts.

Thank You in advance,
Kenneth R Zink II

Whoa. Whats up Kenneth? Haven't seen you since the days when s-series.org was still running strong. Looks like a good start to me. Sorry I have no advice really.

That was my thought exactly.

What kind of power levels are you looking for?

Been busy working 2 full time jobs. =) Hard to believe it has been 10 years since I stopped building on .Org and Joined the Houston Fire Department.

Anyway. Looking for 300-350 HP range. I know stock SyTy's were "290 hp", so I figured with Vortec heads, I should be able to make that range fairly easily.

Also forgot to mention, I have a Code Alarm alarm to install with remote start and turbo-timer built in.

Re: 01' S10 turbo suggestions

Hellcat1, I'm doing something similar, but I'm shooting a bit higher on the rear wheel numbers. And I'm doing a 94 S10. If you look in "Forums > New Members > 94 S10 Bastard Child" not sure if any of it will be of any help, but you can flip through my list of mods I have done and or are in the process of doing.

1) As for Map sensor, I'm using the one from 98 GTP Grand Prix, would recommend doing as such.
2) You might wanna do a different head gasket than the one you posted. I ended up doing Felpro MLS.
3) What Cam are you doing? Custom ground? Or aftermarket?
4) With a Turbo, muffler is kinda optional, the less restrictive the exhaust, the better.
5) What spark plug's are you using? What's temp range on them and if gap~able, whats the gap?
6) Why 3.08 gears?
7) Are you sure you have 4L60E or 4L65E? And is it built, or stock build? Stall? Are you planning on using one?
8) Unless your doing a high rpm engine, I wouldn't suggest the high volume oil pump, as I'm doing stock rpm's and was told by a few shops NOT to use a high volume pump unless I wanted to replace Turbo oil seals from doing forced blow by.
9) Stick with one oil filter, stock setup is fine. Just if your that worried about it, do what I do, change the oil every 1500 miles. I run the balls off my current setup, and w/ the stock engine at 293k miles (no, that is not a typo, those are stock miles on engine only, on 4th trans build now) the engine has light leaking (it spot's in the drive way, I'm not mad at her for this, as she takes some abuse) but doesn't knock, tick, ping, make any oddly or unusual noises nor does it burn a drop of oil! And besides, if the oil filter clog's, oil's just going to run through the oil bypass valve. And if your going to have a major turbo failure (please for the LOVE OF GOD do NOT use a eBay turbo!) then chances are, it's probably gonna take the engine, depending on placement of turbo/plumbing/intercooler/etc.

Please convo me more on your Fuel Injection setup, I'm looking for an Adjustable FPR as we speak.

Not much else.

Did you ever complete any of your projects back in the day?

They all sounded cool.Just wondering.

No, I ended up parting out Hurricane and FireStorm. I do have an '83 Cutlass that will be the recipient of my 461 SFI Olds engine and I'm working on my '01 S10 (Black Beauty)

Obx headers? Are those for a turbo? How about a remote twin turbo setup? That would be interesting. But I don t see how you re going to fuel something like that w/o upping the injection big time. I wouldnt bother unless you're going for atleast 400 HP.

Fueling can be provided with a 4.3 marine intake manifold like UR50SLO used on his turbo Jimmy.

1) My 4.3L has the plastic upper plenum.
615-182-007.jpg

It uses a different style MAP sensor that fits down between 2 upright "arms" (top side, near the front left of the injector opening.) Not sure if there is a turbo/supercharged version that will work with this design.
ec1636_1.jpg

I may have to plug the hole and tap into the MSD 23121 (2 bar) sensor from my 6AL2.

2) The head gaskets may not be the MLS, but they are still the severe duty steal head gaskets 510SD instead of the 522SD. They should be OK since I have ARP's holding the heads down instead of TTY bolts.

3) Stock Cam. It's a 191/195 hydro-roller cam. Should be a good match for forced induction per desktop dyno.

4) I have to do some exhaust work now, but this cat and muffler combo with 3" tubing should be very free flowing. dual 2.25" tubes into cat for a Y pipe. Single 3" from cat to muffler then twin 2.25" dumps under the bed.

5) I'm currently using Bosch +IR plugs (4505) so there is no gaping them.

6) It is what the rear end came with, and I like the highway cruising speeds the top end speed advantage over the 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10

7) Yes, It's my stock 4L60e. I will rebuild it when the time comes.

8 and 9) Keep in mind, I'm remote mounting this turbo, the increased volume will have to push not only for the engine, but all the way back to the turbo and through a second oil filter and possible an oil cooler. But that being said, I will definitely ask the manufacture of the turbo first. I've seen starved turbos take out blocks and spun bearings take out turbos. Since filters are fairly cheep and turbos and blocks are not, I have been seriously thinking of using a double remote filter (like the one below). Isolating the turbo and block protects them both. I usually run my RP 5k miles and check it. If it's not starting to burn or turn colors, I change the filters (previously Wix but now RP), top of with fresh and run another 5k miles.

As far as the adjustable FP regulator goes, the Borg Warner 63885 replacement spider has an adjustable regulator. It has a safety torx in the end of it.

Re: 01' S10 turbo suggestions

This is the marine manifold. It uses normal injectors. Not sure which map sensor it uses, though.

edit: looks like the same map as stock.

No, not for turbo, but they are a very well made set of stainless steel headers that exit at the stock location with ball flanges. Check out Ebay.

do you plan on doing a remote mount under the truck? it would help keep under hood temps down. just a thought.

It's def NOT a MAP sensor. I can take a picture of what it looks like. It looks like an AIT sensor. and I was able to use that hole to fit my MAP sensor! I had to do some modifications though, going to have to check it for leaks under boost though. I might have to find another way.

Re: 01' S10 turbo suggestions

Also, the Throttle position sensor, cannot be used off this unit, you need a GM one, the two sensors have a different voltage range, and will screw w/ the ecm.

I used a LS1 throttle body on my Mercruiser intake.

Also, the intake weighs about 64lbs. It's a beast!

It's a great looking intake, and will have to set some money aside to get one.

Re: 01' S10 turbo suggestions

I believe I have found another intake that may also work, and may even work better with a front mount intercooler. Looks like a cut down Edelbrok 7138 for the Vortec 350.
