L35 questions - now with pics

Can someone post a pick of bone stock L35s.....valve side and rocker side. Trying to reference off a set I have that looks like its got bigger valves and different rocker studs.

What size are the stock valves and what is the typical upgrade everyone is doing?

I *think* that I have a modified set. I'll get pics up soon of the set I have.

Re: L35 questions

Stock valves should be 1.94/1.50 and the most common upgrade is 2.02/1.60 valves. I'll snap some pics this afternoon if I get a chance.

Question - How long before someone says, "Just look at Tooky's engine?" :rotf:

Just poking fun, Josh.

schweet. me thinks I have modified L35s already. Need to grab my calipers tonight and do a better measurment on the valves.

Looking at my studs, I guess the stockers have a shelf on them for self adjustment? The studs on mine dont have a shelf....just the threads then it goes smooth until the bigger threads to screw into the head itself.

Whats the best way to clean heads? Obviously, I need to take them apart. Soap/Water, chemicals?

Hood, I promise I wont bolt them on until we get the truck tuned....then once its running perfect, I'll put on the L35s so we can start all over again ;)

Re: L35 questions

degreaser or brake cleaner to clean the heads. the factory l35 rocker studs aren't threaded all the way to the base. so you atleast have a set of after market rocker studs.

Not sure if I made that confusing... the threads on mine dont reach all the way to the base.... there is a smooth section with no threads, and then it bolts into the head. I'll be able to get some pics here in awhile.

Pics. Sorry, only had a tape measure handy at the moment, so cant get an accurate measurement trying to hold the camera and tape measure steady and be straight on. Need to go get my calipers tonight.

looks like stockers with screw in studs instead of press in studs.

the screw in studded l35s are better for when you go to roller rockers at least.

So im guessing no harm to clean them up and run them as is? Worth spending the money for the 2.02/1.60 valves?

if you're going to go through the trouble of swapping heads, go with the vortecs. i don't think you're going to magically drop .5 off your time with just a head swap. since everything is coming out anyways, do heads+cam, then go with the comp beehive springs as well.

If i did all that, my truck might end up like yours and sit in the garage for the next 7 years :p

you might want to do a cost/benefit analysis of all the work you're putting into a swap from lb4 to a set of stock l35 heads to see if it's worth your time and effort. then again if you're just looking to be able to point at your motor and say "look, i've got L35 heads", then go for it.

as for those 7 years, i really wouldn't expect you to understand how the truck never became a higher priority since you eat, sleep, and breathe sy/ty's, but if it makes you feel better to bust my balls about it, go right ahead. all i know is that i haven't had to rebuild the transmission twice since i parked it.

I think doing either L35s or vortecs are out of my budget or cost if I did it right. L35s would be what, 600-800 done right with P&P, valves, springs, rockers, etc? But I had the L35s sitting on the shelf and never really looked at them until now. Thought I had gotten lucky....but more than likely they will continue to sit on the shelf. Id rather sink money into alky, paint, and all the other stupid small stuff I want.

My truck hasnt been a high priority for the past 3 years, half of that time on jackstands. Im not really wanting to tear back into the truck with anything major for awhile so I can actually drive it and enjoy it for some length of time before the next thing breaks on it. Ive driven it once down the street since Shindig. Its currently sitting in the garage filthy. The heads where sitting there, so if it was easy enough I would have done it. In the long run, im better off burning money elsewhere I guess.

Re: L35 questions - now with pics

There is nothing wrong with running L35 heads. EGR valve is still functional w/them.

I would like to see a comparision between ported L35's & the newer Vortecs equaly ported & same valve sizes in a 1/4 mile comparision.
Should be interesting,& I bet not much difference.

Re: L35 questions - now with pics

My EGR has been removed for years now ;)

If I can run them as is and just throw some 1.6 rollers on, i guess thats better than the LB4. Dunno...time and money. Always have one or the other...usually more time though.

Re: L35 questions - now with pics

The LB4 heads are designed to give you low end torque (high swirl design),which they do,but the trade off is they do not flow good for top end power, the port window size is greatly restricted & too small in size.

So,, yes,,the L35's will flow better than the LB4's
