Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I tested every major performance wire back about 4-5 years ago and gave (per foot) ohm ratings for everything. The post is no longer linked properly on the forum, but if an admin can get that info back, we'll have it again. I'll check into it.

Ill see if I can find it tonight. Do you have the old URL or non-working URL? If so, PM it me if you dont mind.

Bump, looking for some wires myself. Anyone want to point me out in the right direction. I'm also going to use heat protection products to help reduce problems with heat on the wires. Just need to know what the best wires are to run. Building for around 400-500hp.

I recalling this from a long time ago, but didn't the MSD's not hold up to heat as well as Taylors? We don't have the underhood cooling of most vehicles.

Anyone ever tried magnacores? Supposedly, all aftermarket wires are mfg'd by one or two companies that make them to spec and they are privately labeled.

I have had the MSD on my truck for the last 3 Year without a problem . I heading outside to change another car over to them.

mike got msd's in stock? do they make a direct set, or do they need to be made?

Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I used to run the msd's on my old phoon and they gave me no problems at all...ever! I just ordered two sets and some of there orange heat rap for the ends for the new Sy. The other set is for my zr1 that will be replacing the 10 year nology wires that are currently on lt5 now.

Here's what MSD's web site says the super conductors ohm out at per foot!

Spark Plug Wires
If you suspect a spark plug wire to be open causing poor performance, check the resistance of each wire. By checking the resistance of each wire you will determine two things: That there is continuity (not open) and if there is too much resistance in the wire. Use an Ohm Meter and connect the terminals to the spark plug wire terminals. Use care to make sure there is good contact or the readings will be inaccurate. On MSD wires the resistance should be:

Heli-Core Wires (Blue):
150 - 1,200 ohms per foot

8.5mm Super Conductor (Red):
40 - 50 ohms per foot

I think he is talking about the fit of the MSD's. I went through a couple sets of ATR's and have since used MSD's. The MSD could use a couple inches on a couple of the wires for a perfect fit.\, they are a solidly built spark plug wire.

That's the problem I had. I wen't through MSDs on a monthly basis. Headers agitate the melting problem, even with heat shields on the boots. I bought a set of Taylors from Hood, but I haven't tried them yet.

My ass. Look at it.
Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I must be the minority here, Ive used MSD wires before, and had to swap them out many times for Taylors. Ive never had any problem with taylors, they fit better, ends seem to stay on better and they seem to take the heat a whole lot better. The silicon insulation itself seems better. Just my opinion/experience on them...

Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I went through several sets of MSD. the heat made them brittle and then they would crack causing them to short out. I took great pain to keep them way from the headers and even had heat shield on them. I switched to Moroso Ultra 40s and never had a problem since. I won't go back to MSD wires. Never tried the Taylors. It is a lot more difficult to to deal with wire and headers than the stock manifolds. The MSD and the Taylors may be suited fine for stock mamifold applications. My problems was the that the headers caused more heat and closer routing around several of the header tubes. The Moroso wires seem to be able to handle the heat better.

Did you have boots on them? Anything other than heat shields? This makes me want to stay away from MSD. I don't know what to think. I get alot of heat in the engine bay, because I have headers and bigger turbo.

Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I have some Accell 8.8 on my 600+ hp Z28. I measured the ohms on them and they were somewhere in the range of 103. I have been really impressed with the preformance of the Accell wires and the fact that they lasted me over 5 years and still look like new!

Thanks for the help, but I don't own a Z28 :rotf:

Re: Taylor wires VS. MSD wires

I guess the thread should be split between header and stock manifolds. I haven't had any problems with wires and stock manifolds besides the ATR plug connector pulling out of the boot.

Very true. I'm sure it makes a huge difference depending on headers or stock manifolds. I have headers on mine. Accel wires don't seem to be doing the job...

That's good to know about the Accells and the syty's. I was planing on the taylors for my typhoon. I may go with the msd's....After I rebuild my ty:(
