How Much Race Gas?

I will be going to the track tonight for the first time and was wondering how much race gas I should mix with my 1/2 tank of 93 octane. Also, what grade of race gas should I get? I was told It comes in different grades. I was contemplating about 5 gallons. What do you guys think?

Re: How Much Race Gas?

How much boost are you running and what type of tune do you have?
Whenever I go to the track I run 116 octane with probably only 2-3 gallons of 93 in the tank, but I'm running 25 psi and my tune is setup for race gas.

Re: How Much Race Gas?

I will be running in the 17/18 lb range. I'm afraid to go any higher til I get my alky installed. I have no knock at this range on the T-1 setting. It was ran on datamaster that belonged to someone else and it ran clean. I do not have access to using it tonight, so I will play it safe.

Don't blend. Pump out your 91 through the fuel rail, then put the good gas in.

I've seen crappy pump gas screw up a perfectly good tank of 110.

Re: How Much Race Gas?

If you have a half of a tank of 93 and your not having any problems with no knock I would run a few gallons of 116 just to be safe, but you should be fine.
Good luck.

Re: How Much Race Gas?

I run a 50/50 mix of pump gas 93 octane and 110 race gas up to the 20-23 psi range. I run straight 110 octane above that. On your motor you probably don't need any race gas if you have good control of your boost.

Running a little mix of 25-30% race gas would add some insurance against a boost spike or some cool outside temps that may raise your dynamic compression a little. Running above 30% may start messing with your tune.

Re: How Much Race Gas?

If you are running the ultimate and have no knock on the T1 setting try T2 or T3 and see if you still don't get any knock.

With the race gas you should be able to run the more advanced timing programs providing you are not knocking at all.

I used to drive mine on the street on 93 pump gas and T2 setting and no knock.
At the track I'd add some Xylene to my 93 or 5 gallons of race gas and bump it up to the T3 settings.
With methanol and an SMC kit I ran the T3 program on the street on 93 pump gas and had no knock to mention.

It is all in knowing your truck and what it is doing under all conditions.

Re: How Much Race Gas?

Is it safe to run over 18lbs with almost all race gas and not having any monitoring device? or is that taking too much of a risk? I need to find someone to help me tune it in my area. I would like to run a 20/22 lb tune all the time but don't have the tuning equipment or confidence to do it myself safely.
