SyTy FAQ that I wrote

I have been writing up a basic engine/newbie FAQ. Their used to be one on the old syty.net and I finally got around to doing one after about 3-4 years of saying I would. This also might be a worth while post and/or sticky for the newbie section. Please critique, my writing, my information, & omissions. I won't be insulted.

Looks real good Dave, you might want to through in some things about taking care of your transmission i.e. ( cooler, filter, gauge, NOT ABUSING IT TOO MUCH ) and also metion something about the prop shaft since these are pretty much the weakest links.

It didn't even last a couple thousand miles, if that's not weak I don't know what is :rotf:

Oh and if your talking about the so-called 4L80E you supposibly are purchasing, it doesn't count, it's not even on the same side of the country as the truck

How come when you click on FAQ, Mods, and Racing you get all the same information?

Ouch...well the trans is all payed for. Soon I will have it. and I found out the trans was bought by previous owner from a good GN shop but the owner installed it. something was not done right and BOOM. The guy who built it wants to buy it back because of the parts he put in it. So even my Blown up trans is worth more then your working one. :p

Some quick things. On timing do you need to add about disconnecting the wire under the dash?

I had a ex GM mech. (now works at a smog shop) tell me that you do NOT have to reset the ECM after doing this. Never seen that anywhere here.

Also a home page link or "go to top" link would be helpful. Or did I miss it?

Very straight forward, I like it.

Ramble: Tons of potential here depending on how fancy you want to get. Leave the Q&A to syty.net but start a tips and tricks page?? maybe you're there with your links back to syty.net but, I think, tips and tricks would be better because you could "condence" the info. I'll stop now.:rotf:

I am working on them, it takes time to write these up. I should have made them dead links

I was going to out in about tan wire, good catch. I have always reset the ECM.

I think their is one, but I am not going to worry about those details too much yet. I have another webpage I wrote for another project, that I will eventually transform my webpage into. It won't be drastically different but a little more updated & it be will easier for me to manage.

Yeah it might be helpful to condense the info. I may eventually rewrite those pages.

The mods page with be a syty recipe, much like the sportmachines page, except it will have update info & not a bunch of discontinued parts.

The racing page will have the drivetrain issues and how to do a boosted launch.

I never thought about a tips & trick page, great idea but that is a huge project if I want to do a through jobs. Also SyTy archives has a good how to which covers some of these issues.

Dave,

can I "borrow" your FAQ for SyTy.org?

Heck, I should probably just give you some access and you can put it up there yourself

Either way, it should definitely be added to the new .org.

Yeah sure, you can borrow it. As you know it takes time to do this stuff, its going to take me a while to finish this stuff up, plus I write all my pages in pure html

I am not affiliate with the Corvetteforum at all, I am not a moderator or qdmin though I used to be a regular for many years. I owned a Corvette for 12 years. For a while the Corvette Forum offered free webpages, so that is my free web page that I wrote and I have had for 6 or 7 years now. It used to be a Corvette webpage :)

Thanks for asking (hope you dont take my suggestions personnally, in fact
Im wondering if their applicable myself - or if "volunteers" could assist you in writing
up some of these things);

A Syclone/Typhoon owner "probably" needs to know the following:

-a bit about the factory turbo including wastegate, boost and "3 bar" terminology

-a bit about the ECM (boost learning, limp mode, knock etc)

-a bit about the IC (pump failure, IC rerouted lines, MAP temps etc)

-a bit about fluid temps (160 thermostat, fans such as spal, and under the hood temps)

-a bit about tranny (Drive vs OD, TC Lockup, tranny temps, lubeguard, etc)

-a bit about air filter (stock inlet, K&N upgrade, Kenne Bell Upgrade, battery relocation)

-a bit about importance of voltage (alternator, undrive pulleys, starter/solinoid, relay, etc)

-a bit about driveline (AWD wheel dia matching, propshaft upgrade,

-suspension - torsion bar adjustment, rear springs/lowering, sway bars
front steering stablizer, stock shocks vs coilovers)

-a bit about key gauges (temp, boost, fuel pressure, whatever)

-a bit about modifications (S10 wheel cyclinders, motor mounts, grease fittings,
proper alignment, spark plugs/cap/wires, afpr, fuel pump, vacuum lines,
blade of death, traction bars, Elephant Ear/Mirror Replacement, Graphics Replacement
cladding cleaning, etc)

-and a bit about vendors (those on this list who know SyTy's, vs generalist).

Ive always thought that new owers go through the same type of stages,
where 1) learning vehicle (launching, handling, debugging, terminolgy/meaning, etc);
2) cosmetic enhances (wheels/tires, fit/finish of cladding/paint/interior/bed cover)
and Vin Number/Vehicle Sequence Number relationship (with differences between
91-93 like red/black grill letters etc) 3) minor modifications for performance
(like 20g, ultimate chip, etc)

Anyways, I could be wrong - meaning that the above info is known by everyone
and thats the reason they bought the vehicle (SyTy) in the first place

BTW, Ive always enjoyed your posts!

I am clueless

> a bit about the ECM (boost learning, limp mode, knock etc)

Clueless

>a bit about the IC (pump failure, IC rerouted lines, MAP temps etc)

Clueless

> a bit about fluid temps (160 thermostat, fans such as spal, and under the hood temps)
190 is stock, 160 is better

> a bit about tranny (Drive vs OD, TC Lockup, tranny temps, lubeguard, etc)

All I know is that the 700R4 = 4L60 4L60E is the electronic version and the 4L80E is the big beat tranny that weighs another 75lbs.

> a bit about air filter (stock inlet, K&N upgrade, Kenne Bell Upgrade, battery relocation)

The aftermarket intakes are nice. Stock is restrictive.

> a bit about importance of voltage (alternator, undrive pulleys, starter/solinoid, relay, etc)
12 volt system. 14 volts max while running...

> a bit about driveline (AWD wheel dia matching, propshaft upgrade,

65% rear power 35% front. match tire sizes... Propshafts break and used to be expensive

> suspension - torsion bar adjustment, rear springs/lowering, sway bars front steering stablizer, stock shocks vs coilovers)

Lowered looks better, torsion bars turn to adjust height easily but you need an alignment afterwards. Disbale ELC

> a bit about key gauges (temp, boost, fuel pressure, whatever)

Stock sucks, buy aftermarket.

> a bit about modifications (S10 wheel cyclinders, motor mounts, grease fittings, proper alignment, spark plugs/cap/wires, afpr, fuel pump, vacuum lines, blade of death, traction bars, Elephant Ear/Mirror Replacement, Graphics Replacement cladding cleaning, etc)

Sounds neat.

> and a bit about vendors (those on this list who know SyTy's, vs generalist).

There are a few guys taht are good with them. Most mechanics break them.

> Ive always thought that new owers go through the same type of stages, where

- im learning that now

learning

Have known this stuff for over a decade.

3) minor modifications for performance (like 20g, ultimate chip, etc)

Clueless

Many many new owners don't get them because they know how to or want to work on them. I don’t want to work on the dang truck, I must work on it to enjoy it and I accept that. But you are correct. It’s near impossible for a newbie to learn stuff here. If you ask a question here a common reply is, "DO A SEARCH DUMMY” and if you don’t ask… you don’t know. So I do searches regularly and find JUNK and pages and pages of crap that has nothing to do with my problem. If it weren’t for Merk, Marty and Larry I would be COMPLETELY lost here... newbies need SyTy sponsors! lol

Remember, I have been in the SyTy community off an on for about 11 years now, and just bought my 1st SyTy this month. So I’m an old school poster and BRAND NEW owner.

Isnt that the truth. My favorite is searching after being told to search, finding someone whos having the same problem as me , and the replies to the post are "search". Ive also had a couple of threads that are *similar* to what im looking for but not quite the clear answer I'd like. maybe give the new guys five free repost vouchers?

This should also be placed somewhere on syty.net thats noticeable to new guys, I didnt see "stickies" for about 2 months. The more places it is, more likely itll be seen. and already it has some great info.

Amazing how common it is. I have given up for now. Im keeping my Ty stock.
Having my buddy help tune it with his laptop. For that Im giving him a spare Ty exhaust...

Good stuff...
