Typhoon II #735...powder coat time...UPDATED Pics!!

The frame is totally complete and stripped down ready to send to the powder coater. Complete frame weights less than 250 lbs. I also weighed all the cage pieces (12 point...to be installed during final assembly) and it weight in at 70 lbs. I am really pleased on how light this all turned out. Fab guy Bill worked his magic again!

Some pics...The next time you see this frame it will be PCed and being assembled for the last time.

I took some extra pic of some of the detail work...

This is the detail for the front crossmember. The brackets for the a-arms, coilovers, sway bar, steering rack and motor mounts are all attached here. The crossmember is offset in the center to clear the pan for easy removal. Also the main frame rails are widened in front of the cross member to clear the radiator to line up with the stock core support mounting bolts.
ULFLY-DSC00139.JPG

Detail of the offset crossmember for pan clearance, the billet brackets to mount the steering rack and the lower a-arm mounting brackets.
FOXYL-DSC00143.JPG

Detail of the counter sunk welded thread bung for the core support mount.
AMFBG-DSC00140b.JPG

Detail of the threaded bung that the weather tight power wire connector will screw into. The power wire will run inside the frame to the rear located battery. Also a bung was welded here for one of the ground straps.
NEQGC-DSC00141.JPG

Detail showing the threaded brackets that the exhaust system bolts to. When installed there is one V-band, two bolts and unplug the wire to the electric cut-out to completely remove the exhaust. A short turn down can then be clamped via the v-band for open exhaust at the track. This would be done for weight savings as each side exhaust weights about 40 lbs.
QUOCU-DSC00146.JPG

Detail showing mid point Ty body mount. The larger hole in the corner gusset is where the cage will come down through the body into this. The cage will be able to be lowered inside the truck (down through a series of these holes) for final assembly and paint then lifted up and final welded to these gusset plates. Also the frame is notched where needed, for exhaust clearance.
QYOTS-DSC00144.JPG

Detail of transmission cross member with driveshaft loop. Made of chromoly, the whole thing weighs like five lbs...two bolts (welded nuts) take it out.
VNNTF-DSC00135b.JPG

Detail of battery box tucked up under the rear between tire and bumper. One bolt to take out the battery.
NDNEP-DSC00150.JPG

Detail of bracket for mounting electric fuel pump. Easy to get to...
DHMEX-DSC00149.JPG

Details of the parachute bracket and the quick attach receiver. There is a spring loaded pin(not shown) that holds it in place. This receiver is located behind the fold down license plate. The bracket is easily removed for street driving.
NSDIJ-DSC00152b.JPG

The Chris Aliston Fab-9 rear end housing is made of chromoly and weights in at 65 lbs...
GNVSL-DSC00155.JPG

There are many little tapped/threaded holes at various places in on the frame for brake line brackets and fuel line brackets. Also mounting holes for a tubular rail mounted trans cooler and other misc brackets.

Hopfully I will be able to post the pics of the powder coated frame in tha couple of weeks as well as the painted body.

That is very nice. But how are you gonna paint the cage, powder the frame and attach the two together for a nice fit and finish if the cage is welded to the frame? Or am I a dumb ass and don't understand. :dunno:

The cage paint and the frame powder coat are the same color. It's graphite fire-mist. The cage will be pre-painted except for about 1.5 inches from the welds (which will be tig welded little to no splatter) The cage has to be welded to the frame as a requirement by NHRA so it has to go through the body after the body is mounted on the frame. Allowing the cage to be lowered allows the welder to get to the areas that will be close to the body roof. When the welder finishes the inside welds (inside the body) the painter will touch up those weld areas. The cage will be raised to the headliner and the welder then welds the cage to the frame gussets. The areas of the gussets that will be welded to the cage will be taped off prior to powder coating then then touched up with paint after final welding. This is a common way to do this. For this touchup process painters have an additive to mix in the paint that sorta makes the paint "melt" into the neighboring already painted or powdercoat areas, making it look seamless. Check out some of the nicer custom painted cages at the track next time your there. Before I knew their tricks I always wondered "How did they do that".

I though you would say that yours is going to be more of a daily driver than mine...I may have you beat on that also. I have a parachute-tow hitch on mine. I can hook up a camper and head for country...oops, forgot I already live in the country. Well anyway I can pull a camper, if needed. hahaha

That explains alot, I always thought they did some assembly and paint and powder coat all at the same time. Thanks for the lesson...

AWSOME work...

Is this going to be in addition to the white Typhoon you have or are you doing this to the same truck?

Very nice fabrication and thought on dis-assembly and ease of getting to things.

Are you doing the work or a shop there in your town?

This is a second build, prostreet stlye, but will match my other one in looks...sorta.

Bill Davis, a very experienced fabricater/builder from my city. He has been building door cars, rails, alters, etc for years and has owned/raced several. Super guy and great friend.

He is probably getting tired of me after two years of seeing me about every day. Unlucky for him his shop is on my way to work and close enough for lunch. A good part is that we can discuss ideas and design on a daily basis. I help when I can, mostly moral support...but all the welding, engineering, etc is all his. He gives me choices and allows me the decisons...well, most of them.

I am not afraid to get my hands dirty and do most all of the work on my other Ty, but I also value my life...this kind of work needs to be in the hands of experts.
