race or get outta the way
Today was one strange day.
Started last nite with a dfi tuner named harry anderson. We started at my shop at 10pm tuning my dfi module. Harry thought the 911 was loose, doesn’t everybody! On the highway harry says it’s a shame you don’t have a lockup converter. Yes I do and ive got this switch to lock it up also. Once we locked it up manually it was totally tite. What a difference. But either way without the switch it is loose. He set this up with a lot less timing than the ultimate to play it safe, to start with. After doing some 50 – 80 bursts. We turned around after 50 miles. Then we would pull over and launch when no headlights were coming. Broke the tires loose a bit more than the old motor ( didn’t realize how tired I musta been, I’ll get to this more later).
At 2am I decided to leave the dfi in for the next day, since I was bushed.
In the am. Off to atco. 1st run with the dfi. I couldn’t hook up to save my life.
1st run was a dismall 13.4 with with a 2.028 60 ft at 103.5 mph. I never thoiught I would see the day were I would break the tires loose AFTER I launched at 3400 as the truck wants to go sideways, I kept on it and compensated. I mean they broke loose after I launched not as I launched.
Ok, I can live with that, since the dfi tuning is only started and harry coulndt make it today to do more.
So I swap to the ecm with the ultimate, cam heads 50# prom. Wtf my dm wont run. Keeps giving me a runtime 6 error and shuts off. (I fixed after I got home). So this run is worse 14.1 et, 2.136 60ft, 102 mph. I broke them loose launching and spun them all halfway way thru 2nd gear. Ok so I think i might have a traction problem. I actually let off a bit ½ way thru 2nd gear to get it to hook up.
I have so much rubber on my paint, all the wheelwells are covered. Even some on the drivers door. Earlier the anouncer had said lots of people had commented on the great 60ft times they were getting cuz the track was cool and in great shape. Guess they missed my runs.
So with no dm to see if anything changed since yesterday. I do one more run.
This time I launch from an idle!!!!!
No spining this time.
Believe it or not this gives me my best et, 60ft and mph of the day. Imagine before I was launching with 12 pounds of boost at 3400 rpm and wasnt able to use any of it.
So 13.2, 1.960ft, 103 mph.
Yep I definitely have a traction problem. Tires were 44/32. Didn’t try to vary them. That happens on my next trip. (think I might need an education on slicks here).
So since nothing else has worked in my favor today. I got more to tell.
I pull up to shoot the shit more with a guy I was talking with before the last run. Get done and the truck wont start.
Get some wire, strip it with my teeth (remember the dm took a shit earlier so Im screwed) I cant get a code or even the 1-2 sequence before the codes.
Fp is ok, ecmb obviously is ok, no other fuses or fusible links, wires look fine, I cant find anything. This is a quick process that took about 5 minutes. I had spoken to these guys only a minute with the truck turned off. (I wonder later if it was vapor lock).
Ok so I got 3 choices,
1 wait and see if it will start later after it cools. Nope I aint waitin.
2 call a flabed, nope I wont settle for failure here, I aint givin up yet.
3 ok wheres the dfi module. I forgot the base fp we had used on it afer resetting for the ultimate, and I have my timing light to reset the dfi base timing if it runs like crap… if it will run at all. Pkug the dfi in and I drive to my shop.
So I call mad mike over with his spare ecm. Fires right up with his ecm.
Ok put my ultimate back into my ecm. Wtf truck starts right up.
Other than vapor lock or voodoo I don’t have a clue what caused that.
The ecm did feel warm, it had been laying on the floor above the cat so I don’t know yet if theres a problem.
So it was a beginning test anyway. Its not how you start but were you finish is the only rationalization I can think of. Except for one more thing…
Like american express says: DFI Don’t leave home without it!
I have some work to do here in this setup!!!
