Running a Ty T-case in 2wd?

Wonder if anyone know if it'll hurt a Ty t-case if I put it in our Turbo 98 Jimmy and run it in

2wd most of the time. I really don't care for the way the truck hop's around with the stock

T-case. I could run it in AWD all the time but it'd cut down the mpg a few.

Thanks for any help,
Scott~

The Ty T case has no manual control over the AWD, It has a Vicious coupling that does it automaticly, and it should send 10% of it power to the front minimum.

As far as I know all viscous couplings need load on both ends or it will put excessive wear on it and cause it to fail. I am no expert but thats what i have heard so...
Well thats my :2cents:

Re: Running a Ty T-case in 2wd?

Go to my Bw4472 billet planetary thread. There is a full explanation of how the transfer case works. You'll burn the viscous up. Your tricking the viscous into thinking the front is always slipping so it will attempt to lock the front in more (through heating of the viscous fluid and making the "steels" inside couple together). You know that "hop hop hop" you don't like? When you cook it(take it to full hump and leave it there) and the unit seizes up, you'll have 4WD instead of AWD.
Guys are doing the Waller mod where you disengage the front axle to do your burnout but then they reengage it for launch and then leave it on. That's different than driving it around all the time cooking the viscous constantly.

I drove my Syclone for an extended time with no front propshaft. I didn't notice any T-case degradation, but I didn't drive it hard that way, and I'm not suggesting you will be as lucky.

Always use the parking brake if you park somewhere that isn't flat, or you'll find your truck in a different location. I fogot twice, and fortunately didn't have any unattended vehicle collisions, but one of those events did result in my truck blocking the street. I heard a bunch of homking outside and moved the truck before the cops arrived.

Yours may have not instantly died but you did do damage to the viscous fluid and decreased the life of the clutch. You don't have to drive it hard to finish one off. If you read that thread at the end, it will be obvious how it works and how it does damage the clutch driving it that way. In the end, it's your truck, if you don't mind replacing the viscous, go for it.

Re: Running a Ty T-case in 2wd?

Thank you for your information Geroge.
If I can get ahold of a good used Typhoon case... is there any output shaft difference from our 98 to the 92 Typhoon?
I think that's my only last question unless you can think of any other reason it would not be a bolt on/exchange on our 98.
I'll just leave the front differential engauged all the time. Honestly it's a pain to keep going 2wd/4wd when you want to "play" around.
Trying to boost launch in 2wd is a joke. Not going to happen with out slicks.
Thanks again,
Scott!!!!!
