vortec ports

I am in the middle of a vortec conversion but found that the intake, and the 1203 gasket, ports are larger then the 2001 vortec head ports thereby leaving a ridge of about 1/16 of an inch on the vertical side of each port. Is it common to have to gasket match the head ports in order to match the 1203 gasket and intake? Is it safe to cut that much?

I just found a string "RE:Top End Removal/Vortec Swap" that has a pic of a gasket on a vortec (page 4) and reveals the same issue. Is this always an issue? Does this have to be gasket matched??

You don't want to gasket match the ports. My lower intake and intake ports to the head line up. You will end up with a funny flair on both the lower intake and head ports if you gasket match them.

I had made templates for both side (intake & the head) before I port matched the intake to figure out what I needed to port. I really only elongate the lower intake ports. I didn't port those heads myself, but I compare the stock Vortecs and found that I mostly just need to square off the ports to make them retangular to match the intake.
