i do not have this problem with the metal gaskets in my trans am. what can i do about this?

also wonder wtf is up with the different gaskets? have to address the egine builder on that one

what kind of gasket you think the lower one is? the top is a fel pro looks like part number 9354PT1 ring a bell?

the engine had arp head bolts and by feel on the way out i'd say about 80#. the head surface looks broached as well, which may be appropriate for this softer type of gasket??

I agree looks like felpro up top and stocker in the bottom of the pic. I know the ls guys have good luck with the mls gaskets but the cometics are widely used around here and on the trubo buicks and they seem to hold well. Might be something to think about

when you say cometic... all the cometic gaskets i've seen are mls design (multi layer steel)

Well I'll be. I guess the cometic v6 gaskets are a mls design. I never knew that. I figured the gaskets you were talking about were the 5-layer gm ones I see guys using in the ls world

the ones on my car are a 5 layer steel from felpro.. work great! i want that equivalent for my truck.. and i suppose i have to get the block machined smoother for them as i am used to

Re: head gasket failure, mls option?

I have cometic head gaskets on my Typhoon. They work great, I've had them for 1-2 years. The cometics work great but the gasket is no longer the weakest link. If there is a problem you hurt a larger hard internal part, which is must more costly. There are good and bad points about both gaskets.
The problem needs to be fixed then you should probably install another set of fel pro's and thank that the gasket is only thing you hurt this time.

Which one blew out? The Victor Renz gasket is supposedly stronger than the felpro.

is that fel pro number the right one to use?

Fel-Pro offers a severe duty gasket for these engines under part # 510SD. It is a better gasket than the standard 9354PT1 gasket. Part # 9354PT1 is not recommended for our trucks. They also offer an MLS version under part # 522SD.

If you are going to go with Fel-Pro, use part # 510SD instead. Has anyone tried the MLS version yet?

Re: head gasket failure, mls option?

what are the arp bolts supposed to go down to? what if i bought a set of studs instead?

also what surfacing should be done for the fel pros' and same question for the fel pro mls.

The Felpro MLS's are very similar to a cometic. They want a smooth surface finish, although I've been told the Felpro's are more tolerant of a rough finish than cometics are.

I don't think any of the Fel-Pro gaskets require any special machining. I think you can slap those right on after a good surface cleaning. They have tech support people that should be able to answer any questions.

I think the 522SD is what you are looking for. From that picture is looks very similar to the 5 layer Felpro MLS gaskets I've seen for the LS1 cars.

Just for compairison sake heres a picture of the LS1 MLS gasket:

It says right on the front of the package for them that they need at least a 60ra surface finish.

Re: head gasket failure, mls option?

I went to a class for fel pro gaskets a couple yrs ago. What they said in the class is that the mls gaskets need a very smooth surface because the gasket actually moves, if the surface is rough the gasket can't move or it tears when it does move.
Traditional gaskets require the rough surface because they are not suppose to move at all.

So depending on the type of finish you have I would go with the gasket that fits the finish.

Good luck
