Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Well, after a very long time of not touching the truck, some progress has finally been made. Swapped out the non working PS pump (wasn't pumping, then blew the cover off the reservoir... I gave up). Also replaced all the rubber lines under the hood. Looking like I might be able to actually prime the cab in a few weeks and get some paint on this sucker

Finally some tangible progress. Hopefully, over thanksgiving break this truck will be turning black again

You're right... time to take the bed off again :rotf:

Hopefully, a week from today I will have some further progress to post on this. I'm in the home stretch now

Shooting black isnt hard, but its the BODYwork that really stands out with such a dark color.
Arrow straight bodys are time consuming., thus more expensive and challenging!
hope it works out awesome.

I'm using the high fill 2 part primer, so it's working out so far. Definitely have a full days sanding ahead of me before I do any topcoat work :rotf:

Finally putting some color down on this truck  ... we shall see in the morning how this all works out when I go to clear it (the specs are on my camera, not the paint  )

Did you refinish any of the cladding before you painted? I have some cladding that is weathered or has hairline cracks. How do you prep it or fix it up?

My cladding was painted at some point during its life, so my prep work was basically sand, prime, topcoat. I used a high fill primer, which will cover the hairline cracks and such (love that stuff, saves a lot of work down the road). Anyway, here are today's results. Plan is to topcoat and clear the cab tomorrow, and then start on the bed and hood / fenders to finish it off. I did 3 coats base / 2 coats clear on the cladding. Came out better than I was expecting, though there are still some minor things I need to buff out and a little bit of orange peel in places :(

Also solve the no start problem, thanks to a new injector from warmpancakes

What kind of gun are you spraying the clear with? What size tip,how much air pressure, and how far away are you keeping the gun when you are spraying. Looks like you may need a tad bit more pressure and to back up some with the gun. That should reduce that orange peel. Also, I usually do 3 coats clear to allow plenty of room to sand/buff but my guess is that two will suffice.

I'm using a cheapo made in china HVLP with whatever tip came on it. Running 60 psi to the gun and about 40 at the tip. I was close, I tried backing up tonight and it worked out pretty well

Here is the good word for today:
Brand new set of tires, picked them up on sale this morning (Nexen N5000, 235/55ZR17)
The wheels are Borbet Type E 17x8 with 13mm backspace

Various parts of the cowl / cab after 2 coats base / 2 coats clear :D

(not really sure what the little bumps are from on this piece, they are in the clear and they aren't dust or any such. Will get sanded out, of course )

Looking good. I usually use a HVLP gun for the base and a standard gun for the clear. The standard gun will atomize the clear better and lay it flatter. Those new pics that you posted though look pretty damn good.

I'm pretty sure after all this I would have thought about it a few more times before I did it... lot of work involved. All done now, hopefully going to be doing at least some assembly tomorrow before I have to go back to school.

Out in the driveway, changing garage stalls (you can see a nice run on the front of the door by the bodyline, one of 3 in the whole project... time for sandpaper :( )

Floorpan of a truck we went to get a seatbelt from (mine is broken)... good thing sheet metal is soft

Again, the phantom bumps. We'll see what happens to them when I actually sand / buff out the clear

Go to the paint supply store, or check out Eastwoods. Get some "nib files". These are specificlly for removing runs. The paint will be well-cured when you return from school. Perfect for 'filing'. Don't try to sand that big a run without being prepared to re-clear the panel.

If these are indeed in the clear (not the color), and are 'raised', they could be water. Comes from the hot air from the compressor being cooled in the hose (especially if it's on the floor) as it goes to the gun. This usually occurs after you've been shooting for a while.

If they're depressions, they're the dreaded "fish-eyes". Some kind of contamination that makes the paint 'run away from it'. Usually oil (compressor) or silicon (rags or tack rags) contamination.

Hard to tell from the pic, but I think it's water.

Still looks good. You should be proud.

DaveP

They're rasied, so hopefully it's water.

Anyway, today started putting this sucker back together :D
