Question about vortec casting numbers?

I'm looking at a set of heads on E-bay here and the owner sent me a message saying the casting numbers are 10238181, but in the vault it says these are not a vortec head number. The owner assures me they are from a 1996 S-10, so they would have to be vortec's, right?

Any thoughts on where the problem lies.

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

The number is off a l35 head. But the 1996 had vortec. Something is not right.

I was thinking of passing on these, but even then you think $80.00 for a set of L35's isn't too bad of a deal.

Thanx buddy

The price is not that bad. you can pick up sets for around 100$. He states 60hp gain. Dont think so with even ported heads. I dont think even vortecs give that much HP.

Yeah I know L35's are more like 10hp and vortec maybe 20hp, but I was just liking the better combustion chamber idea.

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

I got my vortecs with the "best" casting # (cant remember what the # was right now, but if you search you'll find it) from the local junkyard for $100.00. Sounds like those are just L-35 heads. IMO if your going to do the work do the Vortecs...

I read through almost all the posts on vortec's I could find yesterday and from what I gathered all the vortec's perform the same there is no good, better, best, maybe someone could shed a little more light on this.

Yeh, that's what I read too, it's just the 772's are more popular and may flow a hair more than the rest

I just talked to the seller again and they seemed really cool, they said once they checked the bolt pattern and casting numbers they realized they weren't vortec's but they thought they were because of the valve covers.

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

yeh, it sounded like they came off of a syty the way he was describing them in the auction, so I emailed him and he said they were just stock. If they were vortecs off a syty then $80 would be a steal!!!! I would get the vortecs and spend the time/money on em to get em to fit our trucks...just my 2 cents....

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

stupid question while on the subject of heads. the heads (stock im presuming) on my gt, are they the l35s or vortec? i know the engine says vortec, but i read somewhere it has l35s. im still learning the numbers on these trucks, so sorry for the noob question.

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

The true vortecs didn't come out untill 96 so you probably have the L35's. if you go to the top of this post and click the green "vault" in the first post it has great info about the vortecs...

The knock sensor is in the back of the head? All the l35's I've seen in 95-96 have the knock sensors by the exhaust manifolds next to the sparkplugs

Re: Question about vortec casting numbers?

GM has been pretty loosly tossing around the term "Vortec" since late 91" that I am aware of. Most likly a late 95" early 96" engine with L-35 heads.

Knock sensor mounted on the back of the block? My 92" Ty is on the driver side as described above, same as my Sy and my 92" C/K 1500 full size and I know none of these have ever been touched? So..... :dunno: ?
