Hi from Finland

Hi all!

Decided to register here, since I'm going to buy me a Typhoon within two weeks or so if everything goes as planned. I already test drove it a week ago and made an offer which was accepted after short discussinon ;) The original plan was to buy an European convertible such as MG F or Alfa Romeo Spider, but this seemed much more practical solution (!) since winter is coming and all that...

The truck was originally sold in Swizerland in 1993 and has had 2 owners there. It was imported to Finland by current owner some time ago. It still has to be registered to Finland and also some maintenance work has to be done before closing the deal.

Color is red/gray and it's in pretty good condition despite the 140 000 km reading in the odometer. And all stock as long as I can tell. Photos will appear on my homepage http://pkh.photosite.com under "Current wheels" as soon as the truck gets home.

Finland kicks ass!!

Yes it does, doesn't it? :rotf:

Got my new Typhoon home yesterday. Here's a pic: Typhoon Copyright for the pic belongs to the seller, haven't had the time to clean up the truck and tke pictures of my own yet.

I really don't like the looks of it too much: the colors are dull, the (original) wheels have been painted gray (paint is ok though) and it's way too high. On the plus side all this makes it even more a sleeper and after all the color is original and pretty rare I believe. And I also plan to keep it pretty close to the original in all respects.

Handling is awful, but I think it's mostly due to the poor winter tires it sits on. I'll try to mange until next spring with them and then buy a good set of wheels and tires. And probably a set of new shocks and bushings wouldn't hurt either.

But the interior is in good shape (needs good cleaning too) and almost everything seems to work as it should. This is a good starting point to make it a great truck.

The truck is a genuine import version with yellow blinkers and km-ratings on the odo- and tripmeters. Btw, do you know if import Typhoons had different owner manuals (in this case I'd guess in German)? Mine has lost them and I just bought english versions from eBay.

Wow, looks like Garnet Red if that's the original colour. Congratulations on the purchase!

Couple of new pics after only a quick rinse (haven't got time to clean and wax it thoroughly). A bit dark pictures due to cloudy autumn wether. I'll probably have decent pictures no sooner than next summer since the winter is very dark here up north.

Re: Hi from Finland

Time to bump up the old thread since I just bought my old Ty back after 7 long years. Had to sell it in 2008 to get money for house project. Just checked pm:s and the first opening discussion with the previous owner for the transaction was dated in 2011  So took only 4 years to complete...

Between 2008 and 2015 the Ty has had two Finnish owners and only 10 kmiles. It has been sitting the last 5 years, some of them in a tent :( So I had my expectations pretty low but had to get my old family member back before it was too late. It's not that often when the buyer adds sentimental value on the offer :rotf:

A tow truck took it home two days ago and yesterday I was able to start it up after oil change and oil pressure priming. No big issues have come up so far, but the brakes seem to be stuck (I just remembered that the front brakes were somewhat sticking already in 2008 when I sold the truck). Probably will need to order new calibers. All in all it seems that it looks worse than it really is. Luckily I had a rust protection treatment done in 2006, that has saved from a lot of trouble.

Short term plan is to get it into good mechanical shape and clean it up. Also to prevent any further damage to body panels as far as possible since I'm probably going to use it as a semi daily driver as my wife will need our daily driver more than before.

Continuing, but need to save what I've written so far...

I'm going to keep it stock, but when anything needs rebuilding I might consider some upgrades to improve reliability and performance, but stock look is a must. That is because a long term plan is to add it to the Finnish veteran vehicle registry in the age of 30 in 2023. ;)

This is how it was in 2008

The look will be close to the previous ones as soon as I'll get a thorough cleaning done, but that's not the 1st or 2nd item on the to do list... Need to get it running nice and smooth first.

Re: Hi from Finland

Thanx guys! starting to kind of like the color myself - at least it's easier to spot my Ty in a parking lot from all the white and black ones :rotf:

White/Gray is still the best looking combo in my opinion

So far I've found all the missing lights and filled up the Rockauto shopping cart. I'm surprised how much stuff they have for SyTys. They even had a pair of reconditioned wheels for less than 200 each if I remember correctly.

Re: Hi from Finland

Thanks. Already drove som 6 k miles with almost no problems, but now I've been struggling with a poor running engine for a while. I'm going to dd it until the end of the year, after that I'm planning to restore it - not nuts & bolts resto, but bit by bit towards better condition.

Well, 6 years went like *that*. I daily drove the Ty a bit more than I wanted - my wife got always 1-2 months more at the place she worked and needed our other car and I was like "ok, I can drive the Ty yet another couple of months. Some 2 years an 20 000 km (13 k miles) in total. Not that I wouldn't enjoy but it felt a bit rudeto drive it no matter what the weather etc.

Somewhere in 2018 I started looking for a decent painter for the truck - and already in 2020 i found one! And now it's almost done! A few photos tell the story.20200912_140009.jpg20201002_144407[12449].jpgWhatsApp Image 2020-10-09 at 14.48.13.jpeg20201203_205400.jpg20201207_123648(1).jpg
