Good morning guys!

My Big Stuff-3 with trans control is on it's way, now I have to drag my 4l80E
out from under the bench and fresh-in it up. You guys have posted all the required
parts and mods that it takes at one time or a nother. Would some one be so kind
as to list these parts/mods to save me some time.

Thank's Chris

It's riveted to the passenger side rear of the case.
Here's the location of the tag. It's yellow on this one:

The other way is when you pull the pump, the year is cast into the overdrive crown. Mine is a 2000 model. See over there on the far left, the "00"? Thats where the year of the trans is on the inside if your tag is missing.

What I'm showing in that pic is how you know if all the clutches have been seated correctly. That surface should be perfectly level when the overdrive crown is put in place. If the inner helical surface there that the overdrive planetary sits is sticking up higher, something is not seated right so don't even try to put the pump in.

Here's a quote I'm stealing from David:
The little metal tag thats riveted on the passenger side rear of the case has the following info that can be decoded. Reading from left to right looking at the tag from the passenger side:

Upper left hand corner will be a two digit model number but I dunno how to decode that (yet).

Upper right hand corner will be a "P" which designates a 4L80E (duh).

Lower left hand corner two digit number is the model year (96=1996).

Lower middle and slightly to the right is the calender year.

Lower right corner will be three digits which is the julian date.

Re: 4L80E Parts

Thanks George

I have a 94 model.
I’ve been doing some digging and found a ton of up grades for this trans, are all the hardened input shafts
billet clutch hubs and other hard part mods really necessary? My 400 has a sprag good band & clutches
with a shift kit and I’ve put it true hell and it’s still alive!

Re: 4L80E Parts

It just depends on your goals. Many guys get them because they want to do it once and never mess with it again. There's also a "comfort" factor. They know it's in there and it sorta removes their hesitation to have fun with it. Now if your truck only makes 500 foot pounds of torque and you never intend on going any further with it, you don't need all the billet parts. The only billet part I recommend on any unit that's going to be used for any kind of racing is the billet clutch hub. That part takes a beating. Some guys just want the stock input shaft and main shaft cryo'd with the output shaft. It'll stress relieve those components for a safety factor. When people do the 80e, they want to never have to pull it again. Since you do your own work, it may be practical for you to just put clutches and seals in it. Then if you break something, you'll be able to pull it see what your particular setup needed and upgrade as you go along. I wish I could say, "you don't need any of that stuff". Unfortunately what I've learned is once owners get to really start playing with the truck and things actually stay in one piece, they really start pushings it because of a certain level of confidence. So something that may have been just fine for their prior driving habits, won't be fine for how the vehicle gets treated afterward.
