SOLD MY TRUCK, But Buyer Having Problems?

Hey guys, I sold my truck to a very nice guy and his wife. They flew in from Florida to pick it up and drive it back. I recently installed a new Walbro Fuel Pump & AFPR. The truck runs and ran great. When they arrived, I picked them up at the airport, in the truck, and then took them for a drive in it for over 15 miles on and off the freeway at 95mph as well. I wanted them to be completely satisfied before paying for it. They were. Then, they stop to get gas about 20 miles away, and leave it idling. (Heat soaking the IC). Then they shut the truck off after filling up, and it wouldn't start. I figured he heated up the solonoid, since it is 100* out. Sure enough it started after letting it cool off for five minutes. Before they left San Diego, I asked them what would be their route? He said they had planned on the Interstate 10. Then he saw the 8, and I told them not to take it. It is hot and dessert and no services. They take the 8. After 150 miles into the dessert, he calls saying the fuel press. guage was starting to drop off, and then while on the phone, it stalled. I asked if they had just got gas, and he said yes. After about 5 minutes he calls me and tells me the fuel press. is back up with the key in the run position. That makes me think the fuel filter is clogged. Luckily I gave him a new fuel filter in the back of the truck. But do you guys think this is the problem?

the fuel system is totally independant from the IC. if your having FP issues you could leave the IC in the truck and it wouldnt matter. FP problems are either the pump or filter. it really is pretty simple.

The heat could have got to the AFPR too.

1. Don't feel bad about it. You told him not to rag the car and he has done that - highway 8 = no, so he goes anyway?

2 They break when it is least convenient to do so.

3...(and most important) What Sy/ Ty have you bought in place?

4. Who is the guy and when is he on the forum? New members with a love of these trucks are great.

relax :D

Not to sound like a dick, but when you buy used and form a person, you buy as is.

You tryed to help out, but there really isnt much you can do. The trucks probably got a shit load of heat soak like you think. I know if I drive anywhere around here in a 95 degree day with the ac on, my intake temps are in the 150's. And the truck runs piss poor. Because being that hot my AFR is way lean. Just a thought. ;)

I totally agree plus add driving up inclines to that... besides the new owner might have been in a bite of a hurry and beat on the truck a littel more then you normally would think to do in those kinds of temps with the ac running hauling up hills.. especially since he didn't take your suggestion or the previously planned route makes me think they were trying to make up time.

It already sounds like you've done as much as you could or more then any other seller would have offered when selling a used 15 year old performance truck.

I drove back from sacramento in a brand new cadilac and as I was driving up a larg grade in some very high heat I couldn't help but to notice all the broken down cars along the side of the road on that mountain. The high heat and that long grade really take it out of a car and you have to baby it in those conditions. Even the brand new cadi's temp got way up there. Very dumb idea to run a six cylinder heat generating turbo vehicle in those conditions if you ask me. Mike at RPM wouldn't let me take my sy for the weekend on that trip, unless I flatbed it. Glad he stopped me.

I know how you feel, when Tim came up from Florida to buy my original Sy I was nervous as hell that he planned to drive it home. I tried to get him to trailer it back, but he is kind of stubborn :D . He was supposed to stay the night and leave in the morning, but elected to leave late that same night. I could barely sleep I was so worried something was going to go wrong even though I knew it was a very good truck and I had never had a problem with it.

Bottom line; it is an "as is" sale and you did everything you could. These trucks are old, things can/will happen.

Herer is the latest. I've been on the phone with him non-stop. The starter seemed to quit working, and again, that was probably do to heat soak. That sucks, then the whole fuel press. problem. Well, he did get started, and the fuel press. did come back up, and he made it to a little town called El Centro, which trust me, IT IS THE ARMPIT OF THE US. Anyhow, he got the starter replaced, and the fuel filter. I've not heard back from him since except once. To top it all off, the hood release cable broke! Luckily I had a new one for him in the back, as well as a filter for him. As well as a new fan belt. Anyhow, i"ve not heard back from him since. I sure hope he takes it easy. I'll pass along all this info to him if he calls me again, about the heat and the AFPR possibly being affected as well. Thanks again.

Re: SOLD MY TRUCK, But Buyer Having Problems?

Not really related, but driving my truck home (stl, mo) 1300 miles after I purchased it in Virginia .... when I would WOT it , the boost would "flicker" at 10psi before it would make it to 15psi and make a thumping sound .... it hasnt done it since. Was that KNOCK? I am not sure if my intercooler works either ... can you damage an engine just running a turbo with no intercooler pump working? Thanks ---

I guess mine is going to sit until I get the pump installed, hahah. How much should I expect to pay to have a shop install a johnson pump I have? Thanks ---

You should do it your self . No need to pay someone for an easy item like that .

Re: SOLD MY TRUCK, But Buyer Having Problems?

Well, seems like he made it just fine. The AFPR was the issue. I don't know if it vapor locking or what is going on, but it dropped fuel press. again, after 1500 miles, he called me, I told him what I heard here that it might be the AFPR, and so he poured water on it, with the key in the run position, and his wife watched the fuel guage read higher and higher until normal. He then took off again, and has had no issues since. I'd say he is home by now, so that happened to him twice. So I did sell a good product, and the new AFPR was the culprit. Anyhow, he is happy, his wife is happy, and all is well. Thanks for the tips, because it sure did save the day.

Hay all, I am the idiot that tryed to make a run i the desert.well i made it home the ty ran great. I was not able to run the a/c durring the drive becouse of the heat it add to under the hood. with the ac off never had a problem. but with it on and driving around 85 it would start to heat soak the AFPR. when that would happen i would see the Presure drop a bit so i would turn off the a/c and slow down a bit. Well i will be posting alot asking about diffrent things. And yes for anyone buying any car or truck it is best to have it shipped!!!!

Re: SOLD MY TRUCK, But Buyer Having Problems?

when me and my wife got my sy we drove from houston to oklahoma in a rental and drove the sy hback to houston. it was an ok drive the way back, the check engine light came on a few times but would turn off by itself. also the steering was crazy, still kinda is but not near as bad. my wife couldn't drive it because of the slop in it. we drove home at night so the heat was not an issue plus it was just starting to cool off for winter. i raced an m3 on the highway and i think it suprised them, I didnt win but i didnt think i would given it had a DINAN SUPERCHARGER emblem on the trunk oh well. good luck with your ty, my sy has been a blast and I can say the people i have meet on here couldn't be a better bunch of people and we are looking foward to making new friends in this community.
