Happy with the truck, UPDATED

Finally got the truck running close to where I want it late last week and went to the track last night and ran some decent, consistent times. Remember, this build has run 11.9 in the past so I know there's more in it but at least now I have a good new base line.

8 runs:

60' low 1.697 high 1.75
330 low 5.02 high 5.138
660 low 7,86 high 7.92
660 mph 84 high 87
1000 low 10.27 high 10.53
1/4 low 12.39 high 12.60

As you might imagine times got better as it cooled off.

If I throw out the lowest and highest it tightens up even more. did good in eliminations, lost to a 2500 Dodge diesel who had a 5.5 sec head start and ran dead on his number. Fun race though. He went on to win the class. I intend to get him next week. :D

Here's a representative DM run if someone wants to throw some comments my way.

Thanks.

Thanks. The link is to a DataMaster file you have save and then open it in DM.

Pretty clean run. Assuming your wide-band is set up and accurate, it's plenty rich.

Also, your MATs are pretty high... both at the start, and at the finish.

Your timing is pretty conservative, assuming this is race gas (alky?). Until you get your IAT issue sorted out, it isn't a bad thing. Generally, race gas tunes are above 20 degrees.

I'd also play with converter lockup points and see what it does. A lot of times, a bigger cam doesn't like a lockup that pulls you way down in RPMs.

Getting some fuel out of it and your IATs back in line and it'll run high 11s all day.

This isn't the stock turbo still, is it?

Ha, I wish. With the stock turbo you can actually watch the boost come down as the motor begins to pull. Kinda interesting. This is a custom turbo: Ported stock housing with a clipped turbine connected to a 60-1 compressor.

As far as the mixtures go that's the plan. At least now when I make a change I can see it on DM. It took me awhile just to get to this point which is why I posted. I'm finally OK with where I'm at with the tune and can now work on fine tuning things. (Sorry for the pun.)

Must be a nice feeling. Are there SYTY's that run consistent? I know mine never has, something always goes wrong when I bring my truck to the track.

Re: Happy with the truck, finally

Good question Mike. All I know is two weeks ago at the track the Sy was all over the map. Last week it settled down and ran what I thought were very consistent times.

The only difference BTW was timing. I reset the timing from about 2* late to about 2* early. Woke that puppy right up. Also I'm running lots of octane. Lately I've been mixing about 1/4 91 to 3/4 100. I don't know if there is any kind of direct relationship but spark retard is very low which can only help.

How much boost are you running?

Looks good i was just looking over the DM run it looks like your injectors are WIDE OPEN under boost

But also looks like your pig rich at the same time do you have a gauge on your dash? your run says 10.0 and WBs wont read lower then that on DM so lean it out get it around 10.8 -11 looks like you have plenty of injector.

Were you running alky on that run?

Like DIG said your IAT are high alky will help that huge looks like it could have been high from hot lapping it but still they should be lower.

great to hear its up and running though

Re: Happy with the truck, finally

Boost is about 24#. And yes, I was spraying alky.

Yes, the inj's are running open. WB on the dash shows just above 10.0 as well. These injs have been tested and don't flow correctly at these boost levels. I'm researching new injs. Bosch was suggested. I've been through two sets of injs and they both go south at high fuel pressures.

I've experimented with lowering FP's and the tune has a leaner setting and I've yet to see a reduction. I'm guessing (hoping?) I'm right on the edge of seeing the mixture start to lean a bit. That's where I'm at right now. News at 11:00...

Dumb question but are you sure your alky is working?

at idle what does your wb read? 14.7 or so then what does it read when you use the test button on the alky control? does it drop? also where is your alky set on the dial 1-10?

those intake temps are way to high if your running alky unless that turbo is just creating that much heat at those boost levels... but it shouldnt

i mean my intake temps are around 80 deg max with my alky spraying at 18# with a pt60-1

one other question what AFR are you running with no alky with the truck that rich and the timing you have set you should be able to do a pull with no alky and see what the WB reads?

> No, but I think so. I had a chip controller issue (long story) that I' fairly sure I fixed today so tomorrow I do some testing again which, hopefully will give different results.

After thing about this I went out and looked at my alky tank (Duh). It's down some so it's spraying I just need to work on the mix so-to-speak.

> Yup, 14.7 dancing just a bit. dial is set at about the 10:00 position. I don't have numbers on my controller.

I will do a no alky test tomorrow. And also make sure that the alky system is working all the way to the nozzle. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

I'll bet you're still a ways off. FP won't move fuel much, coupla tenths of an AFR if you're lucky.

Furthermore, it'll be richer in some places and less so in others.

Knowing you, you're prolly correct. The real cure will prolly be some injs that work like they're supposed to.

I'm curious as to what makes you think your injectors aren't working.

The Mototron 60s/65s would work nicely for you.

Re: Happy with the truck, finally

I had them tested and begin to flow erratically as FP goes past 50#. The chip is made for 50# injs would I need to have it modified for 60#'ers?

Thanks

Re: Happy with the truck, finally

Thanks to Silverblaze and Dig I dove into the alky system and found I had the "initial" set way to low. Fixed that and the truck just took off. Last night was very warm for Infineon, temps in the 80's.

1) 12.246 @ 111.26
2) 12.18 @ 110.6
3) 12.06 @ 111.7
4) 12.021 @ 113.0 so close, I know it can do 11's, it's done it before.
5) Temp is down from 83 to 76. First round of eliminations, I dial 11.99, brake hard at the end, truck still breaks out. 11.981 damn! Calculating my ET that should have been an 11.95 run.

If I'd have been able to keep running as temps cooled might have seen 11.8

Pissed that I broke out but happy with the truck. Here's the DM. Not perfect, but way better than it was.
Best short times were the last at 1.677 60' with a 1000' ET of 9.95. Single digit to 1000', wow! I can tell you that it's a kick in the but running that quick. :rotf:
