Ignition lock cyl.

Ok so need to change mine out since the truck wouldn't shut off today untill I unhooked the alt...
I got the steering wheel off and used the steering wheel puller to get the mount off. Now the metal plate in front of the turn signal cam needs to come off. The instruction say I need a tool to compress that to get the lock ring off any way to get that compressed without the special tool?

1st lock cyl I've attempted to change:squint:

Yes you need that tool to compress the spring behind it. You MAY be able to do it with 2 people if one person pushes down while the other removes the C-clip. I never tried it this way cause I have the tool, but just a thought.

Re: Ignition lock cyl.

Was the lock cylinder bad or the switch down on the column?

X2 - The ign. cyl. has nothing electrical attached to it. If your steering still locks when you turn the key back to "OFF" then it's not your ign cylinder.

He may mean he couldn't turn the key back to the off position because the cylinder locked up. That's what happened to mine and I had to do the same thing, unhook the alt.

Just get the tool to compress the plate, it makes life a lot easier. I tried the two people thing and still couldn't get the c-clip out. Once I got the tool it took less than a minute. Having a set of small curved picks or c-clip pliers makes things easier too, the c-clip is a bit tricky even with the plate compression tool. It is hard to pry it apart without it just spinning around. I got the compression tool at Pep Boys for like $10.

Re: Ignition lock cyl.

Getting the tool today. Yeah the cyl locked up cannot turn the key to OFF position.

Gotcha.

The tool is the way to go, specially if it's that cheap. It can be done without it, but it's not fun...
