Brand new GMC fan, on SyTy.net ! JUST BOUGHT A "Tyclone" !

Hello everybody. I would like to introduce myself- My name is Mike O. (aka "O-Dogg")

Anyway, I recently bought a pretty clean '94 GMC Jimmy SLT (4X4) from the orig owner and I LOVE the truck! Digital dash, with a nearly identical interior to the '93 Ty's (minus the gauges and console shifter..with lower armrest ;)) ... so I checked out a couple things on here briefly before...
BUT, now I have a REASON to be on here. I just purchased a Jimmy that was converted to a Typhoon "clone".... aesthetically, that is. The truck was built around '97 with only 24,000 orig miles on it. (I guess 11 years ago- the Ty/Sy parts were still readily available, but I'm sure they were still not cheap) The Jimmy is a 1985... still has the orig dash (and column shifter, of course) The interior was swapped from a nice ('92-'94) Bravada.

The Typhoon is my DREAM truck and has been- but I'd NEVER considering doing a pro air ride set-up on an AUTHENTIC Ty... but NOW, I will be able to make that happen.

2 more things:
1) My "Tyclone" is a 4 X 4 ! (LOL)
2) The "Tyclone" has a '92 LT1 engine under the hood.

It can actually pull away from a STOCK Typhoon, per the owner.
(although, I'm sure not in the rain!) The 4 X 4 can't really handle the extra 100hp from the 5.7 liter LT1

I can't wait to pick it up! I will put some pics on MotorTopia.com - please let me know what ya think. THANKS

the extra 100HP? walk away from a stock Ty? does an LT1 has 430+ hp? they HP and torq for these and those are about the same i believe. it's a nice truck none the less. now slap a turbo on that thing.

welcome!

swap that transfer case out for a bravada AWD and swap the front diff for the same bravada one and it's AWD then.

good looking truck though, although the sunvisor and interior doesn't really fit with the rest of it

swap out the dash for a newer one, maybe even put a sy/ty cluster in it. there's a few guys on here parting ty's out if you did want to look into swapping interior for black TY stuff.

someone definitely put some time into it, if you only paid close to $3200 thats CHEAP for an LT1 swapped 4x4 with full ty exterior change and paint, sounds like a good deal to me.

you could AWD it for around $400 or so. i got my bravada front diff and transfer for 200 with a waranty from local wreckingyard both with low miles

I wish more people would think like you. Use the regular trucks and save the rare ones. .

Welcome and congratulations on your truck!

Sorry- I meant over the engine that came in a Jimmy. (Vin code W, which is 200hp)
The LT1 has 300 horsepower...so, yeah they're about the same as a REAL Ty/Sy truck. Actually the LTI probably makes slightly LESS horsepower. (I've heard of Typhoon's making close to 300whp, stock) The LTI doesn't have as much torque of the Ty/Sy engines either... but I'm sure it runs wells none-the-less. It def has POTENTIAL...

Re: Brand new GMC fan, on SyTy.net ! JUST BOUGHT A "Tyclone" !

and yup... s_blazin,that's exactly what I was thinkin of doing. I would LOVE to have the AWD on it...awww man!! I think it's funny that it is actually a 4X4... I heard from the guy I bought it from (3rd owner) that the orig owner (and builder of this "Tyclone") had all four tires smokin in 4WD, but he broke something doing that...a couple of times.
...I STILL can not believe this truck went for this cheap. I LUV it !!!!
Dave- I'm pretty sure the dude actually purchased all of the Ty parts either NEW from GM, or they were removed from some Typhoon's that were parted. (he built this truck over 10 years ago) I'm not sure how "available" the parts were then... probably STILL hard to come by- but not as much as they are today.
Also- now that you mention that- I must have been mistaken about the rear seats. Those are from a two-door....so maybe they're from an older Jimmy or Blazer ? They're not the factory seats, from 1985 though. Yeah, I didn't even think about that... those rear seats aren't from a 4-door at all (no armrest).

Someone put a lot of work and [stolen?] parts into that. I didn't know a 4-door rear seat could mount into a 2-door. I guess it does, but it doesn't fit very well. Welcome aboard. It's starting to feel like there's more Clones, V8's, and Blazer/Jimmys on here than turbo-4.3 Syclones and Typhoons. Although, the OGs for the most-part still seem to have 'real' Syclones and Typhoons.

IIRC 4 door seats had a fold down arm rest

Re: Brand new GMC fan, on SyTy.net ! JUST BOUGHT A "Tyclone" !

I bought GM cladding in 1998 when I did my Typhoon project. 2 rear corners, 1 rocker, 1 front quarter, 2 rear eye-brows. It was right at $1,750 wholesale. The bumper cover was 800, although I didn't need one. Cladding was stupid-expensive even then, but available. I doubt anyone did a clone with GM-new parts. Too expensive.

WOW! Nuh uh... Why did you have to buy so many pieces? That's crazy... $800 for the lower bumper. Dayamn. You're right though- I'm sure they weren't "NEW" og parts, from GM.

You're right about the (no) center arm-rest. But it sure looks like Olds (Bravada) pattern and leather. edit: I have my friend's 94 Bravada in the yard. I just looked at the seat. Yep, yours is the same pattern, but the center is different. Olds never had a 2-door. They must have re-covered the 2-door seat with the 4-door covers, after modifying the center section, and thus it doesn't "look right"? :dunno:

Now, I'm real confused... I know that the seats have the Bravada-style leather, but that's crazy. I gotta find out if the original owner really did that....

Thanks very much though...

If the rear seat was out of a 4-door, wouldn't it have a release in the middle of the back? Towards the top, instead of down at the side like the 2-door.

I agree. I think that's exactly what they did too and it's certainly early Bravada design. Good catch Dave!

Yep... I guess I'll find out this weekend. (I haven't received the truck yet- It's being brought here on a trailer in exchange for my wrecked Grand Prix GTX w/ only 23k miles)

I gotta check that though- If it's seriously the oem (or another 2-door) rear seat that has been custom wrapped with the Bravada pattern- that would blow my mine. ha

Ebay link works fine for me....

Not sure if anybody noticed this guy's Sig... but he has quite a few AWESOME Sy/Ty parts available. He is coolest "car guy" I have ever met... for sure. Thanks again for taking the time to show me all the parts you had and dealing with my OCD while "examining" the Ty seats bro! haha

By the way guys... my new buddy delivered the Tyclone last Friday! I still haven't REALLY had the time to check it out on the INSIDE- but I noticed that it does NOT have the release in the middle of the back seat. Apparently, the orig builder took a 2-door Blazer seat frame and had it wrapped with the Oldsmobile leather !!! (I THINK).. I'm going to look as soon as I return to my garage today..! Pretty crazy..
I will post some better pics too.

One thing I noticed about my "clone" is that the Ty wheels seem to stick out a little more than they do on actually AWD TySy trucks. I doesn't appear that they're sticking out as much as 2wd-wheels would on a 4X4 S-Series truck though..? If you bolt Sy/Ty wheels onto a 2wd S10 or S15, would they stick "IN" a little bit...or be flush with the fenders ?
