Transmission needed for 11.7sec@115mph qtr mile times.

I've gotten to know the Syclone fairly well in the last year or so. #579 is coming back from a neglected state (at only 28k miles when i took ownership!) I've done the following (all DIY) with a LOT of help from you guys:

Brake system - Completely replaced entire stock brake system (with stock system... for now).
Ignition system - UR5 plugs, Taylor Wires, MSD Coil, MSD Cap & Rotor, MSD Distributor, Set timing to 0deg
Fuel system - Walbro pump (only non-DIY item), fuel filter
Drivetrain - Blake front propshaft, Royal Purple in all axles
Misc. - Installed: 160deg t-stat, Blower motor relay, heater core, front speakers, some rear cladding, added tonneau cover, rear spoiler (FTW!), K&N stock replacement, Mobil 1 10W30, replaced some damaged interior pieces, solid steering shaft, polished and waxed back to good condition!

Normally I wait 6 months to get to know a car before deciding how I want to improve it. It's taken close to a year just to get the Sy in shape to set a goal and decide on what upgrades to do to reach it. Now that the engine is running in good shape (i will datamaster this coming weekend), I think it is getting close to that time. I think the tranny is on the way out also.

My goal is to build the Syclone to the level to run a mid to high 11 sec. 1/4 mile with a trap speed of 115mph. Obviously, budget is a MAJOR concern. :2cents:

The first step is the transmission. I do not beat on my truck so I plan to stay with a 700R4, get an aux transmission cooler and treat it right. With the Blake propshaft, I think I have already taken a step in the right direction. Since Blake is gone, I was looking at a couple sources for transmissions:

1. RPM ($2495)
Pros: Board vendor, looks like good support
Cons: Price

2. Waller (~$2100)
Pros: Board vendor, only 150 miles from me
Cons: Price, availability/core requirement (I may have to send a tranny to him to get upgraded which I cannot do at this time).

3. CK Performance (Stage 2: $1699)
Pros: Price, support (from reading some threads on here)
Cons: ?

4. eBay transmission source ($900)
Pros: Good looking chicks with guns in their ads (chick with guns), Price!
Cons: Uncertainty/risk of support/service

At this point I am leaning towards CK performance as it will leave some money for the other mods I will need. Thoughts and feedback are greatly appreciated. (except that I need to get a 4L80E! :2cents:). Also, what stall would I need for my goals?

Well I took mine to a local AAMCO Dealer! Most of these guys build trannies for a living. 12 month Nationwide Warranty. It breaks from Racing, beating on it, or cruising to your friends house its covered. Once i got over that 550-600 HP power range my guy turns to me and says you willl need to manual shift it now. I was like what you talking about, he has when you leave in drive the trans is applying pressure to all the clutch packs and wearing them out faster, if you drop it down to 1st gear and leave its direct drive from the drum and it will last. Low and behold i never had any clutch issues after that and the only thing they needed to replace after 2 years was the 2 bands wore out and he replaced with Kevlar Extreme Duty. We also upgraded everything to the 4L65E parts that are available.

In 9 Years of Ownership my tranny was rebuilt twice, 1st time was from installing the Converter wrong and the 2nd time was from brute power and changed my way and never again.

No Shift Kits.......

Support sy/ty vendors. Waller was taught by the innovator of the 700/60e market.
RPM sells good trannies too. If I lived near Chris at CK I would use him, but he doesn't have the sy/ty experience either of the other do.

I would also like to hear what john has to say about manual shifting.

I tell you this much. When they pulled the tranny out the last time for it feeling a little slippish when manually shifting from 2-3. The band was burned up but they only used a mild band. He replaced with kevlar and he showed me the clutches "they looked just like the brand new ones that i made them buy for the warranty" This trans was in my truck for the 2 years of 40-50 track passes, tuning, and 10-15,000 miles of street use.

I was pulling 1.60 60 fts and doing burnouts through the water and that helped my 60 ft times.

Hay Ralph did you have billet or hardened output shaft with your build?

have you checked into bowtie overdrives, don't know much about them but maybe another one to consider.

Interesting, their 700R4 Level 3 FULL MANUAL VALVE BODY would force you to manual shift as per comments this is beneficial. I would not want this for a street driven truck though.

What are the opinions on the 765R4?
Full 4L65E (2005-6 Trans) Drive Train Retro Fitted into a 700R4
A/C Delco 5 Pinion Planetary Set
Full Torrington Bearings Throughout
THIS MEANS NO THRUST WASHERS
Reinforced Bushings covering 50% more surface area for High Torque/High Horsepower applications.

Doesn't sound like anything special.
