Wandering steering

epix

Typhoon
My steering seems very loose, especially when cruising at 50mph+

The Ty will seem to wander left or right.

My setup right now is: KYB monomax shocks, Ranch RS9000 Steering stabilizer, drop blocks 2" rear, and 315 rear/275 front bfg tires.

could my steering box be bad? if I were to upgrade this, should I keep it stock or use that ZQ8 box?

Re: Wandering steering

Have you adjusted the mesh of the steering gears on the box? 5/8" wrench and a 3/16 Allen I think.

BTW, not kidding.

Re: Wandering steering

is your truck lowered i lowered mine and noticed that the front suspension is riding on the bump stops when i took it in for a alignment after powercoating the whole suspension

http://syty.huryde.com/gallery/Pics/aai

the guy said that if i l cannt lower anymore because the camber is at it limit right now and its not that low in the front so if you are two low your camber might be off and you might have to raise it a little in the front.

which will cause it to wonder.
i replace the whole front suspension ball joints and idler and pitman arms for under $200.00 from Ebay. so you might just want ro replace everthing.

Re: Wandering steering

First thing that comes to my mind if wandering at speed is toe-in. Also the doughnut thingy in the steering shaft.

Re: Wandering steering

I'd start with the idler arm (but while you're in there, might as well do it all). My steering was downright scary. I just totally rebuilt my steering at 120k mi and all parts (pittman, inner/outer tie rod ends) were basically OK (I replaced them anyway), except the idler arm was 'way, 'way gone. Ball joints were shot also. I'd say just replacing the idler arm would have solved 90% of my problem. Renz shaft fixed most of the remaining 10%.

Re: Wandering steering

What all is needed to rebuild the front suspension? Bushinigs, ball joints, tie rod ends? I plan on doing it after my rear gets done in about a month.

Re: Wandering steering

Yeah, we should create an entire parts list needed for front steering maintenance and vault it.

Re: Wandering steering

I had the same problem. I did the PST front end kit, Bilstein front shocks, Idler arm and i just orderd the new sterring box from spooldup. I am going to get the new steering shaft from jwaller and hopefully a wheel alignment and thats it.

O one more thing i went for the big brake kit.

Re: Wandering steering

Idler arm may do the trick, but generally with big tires, especially up front, the truck will want to follow the grooves in the road. Lowered trucks with tortion bars don't help either. I'm hoping the coil-overs will soon fix that problem for me.

Re: Wandering steering

I have a new, never used Renz steering shaft if it comes down to where you need one. I was going to use it on my rack and pinion setup but it didn't work out.

I still owe you the amp and subs information. I will try to get those this week.

Can you give us more info on your rack and pinion setup?

Thanks,

Re: Wandering steering

Try taking it to an alignment shop. They should be able to tell you if anything is loose, (like the idler arm probably is) and also they can let you know if it is out of spec.
Mine follows the road a little still, but after the alignment and all the front end parts, it actually started driving like a normal car. Cost me a bundle though (lots of parts), but I didn't have time to do it myself. Good luck.

I think this is good advice. Let an alignment shop look at the suspension and tell you what is needed. Most will give you an inspection for free and show you what is wrong. This way you will not have to spend money to fix stuff that is not causing the problem. However there is something to be said for the confidence in ALL new front suspension components.

Re: Wandering steering

Any unusual tire wear? Tire pressure correct? Abnormal front end pressure (usually due to temp changes) affects my steering.

My upgrade

Check into this really. i ended up spending an hour of my time, and $35 dollars to get the exact same thing as you would by putting in a $200 shaft. I couldnt be happier with mine!
