Ty paint job cost

To the guys that have already had their Ty's painted:

How much did it cost to get it done?

How good of a paint job did you get for the money you paid?

How much of the work did you do yourself?

I'd really like to hear from the guys who did a little of the work themselves (i.e. pulling cladding, handles, etc.) Not necessarily the ones who took on the task of painting it themselves. I'm curious how far the dollar goes with a job like this. I've been to a couple of body shops who just said "Well, I'm not really sure of the cost until we get it in here and strip everything off." (Kinda scared me).

I'm getting embarassed to drive it anymore, since the paint is starting to come off in pretty big chunks now. You know----the typical late 80's/early 90's GM paint.

Depends on what you expect. If you want to when a best of paint award or just have a 20 footer. I would think a couple grand would get you a 20 footer. I expect to pay in the 3000 range for mine but I will help the guy with my truck and he owes me anyway because we went and wired his whole building with power, network, telephone and cable. Also depends on what color your Ty is, black requires the body to be perfect or very close.

Depending on where you live too. Here for a top notch job you are looking at 6000 to 7000.

Re: Ty paint job cost

I've been quoted 6000-7000 from a few shops, if I strip the hood and roof myself since those definatley are the worst areas on mine. I worked with the guy, and since I'm anal I'm stripping the whole thing down to bare metal. With me stripping it all, taking the door panels, some of the interior, grille, lights, window trim, rear window etc. off I'm now down to around 4000. He's going to handle the cladding though. He doesn't want me to take it off since he'll be hanging and aligning it. I don't really have the patience for that kind of thing. This is a rust free AZ Ty too, with only a few minor door dings. If your truck has rust, then it'll be considerably higher. It'll be black again too, so that involves the necessary block sanding over and over again.

I was told by other shops that if I didn't want it black then it'd be a little cheaper. I decided to walk away at that point, because the same effort should be put into every paint job IMO no matter what color it is.

IMO you need to really ask around, and see who the local hot rodders recommend.

The best painters are alcoholic/crackhead/heroin addicts.

Cause you gotta be so ****ing focused to do that shit right.

I would say 4-5 grand for a BC/CC wetsanded masterpiece.

Just find the weirdest old guy that the locals trust. He's your painter.

To have mine totally repainted PPG Midnight Black after my wreck I paid $1000 but it was nothing special as the cladding remained on the truck and its starting to crack on the passenger door fender, also there is orange peel. Was painted by a guy that was HS friends w/ my stepdad so hence the cheap price.

For my House of Kolor I bought all the materials myself (~$600) and tracked down some local guy thats been painting forever.. he was working out of another guy's paint shop and talked with him. Price of his labor was ~$700. I don't have the receipts in front of me but I have recorded pretty much every $ into my Typhoon and thats what I remember off my head. So ~$1300 to just paint the top half of my Typhoon. Of course the painter was extremely hard to get ahold of and communication was almost null, I just got lucky on the guy actually having skills. If I were to do it again I'd be more inclined to go with a more 'reliable' painter.

Re: Ty paint job cost

go buy a beater car that needs body work.......not a pos but that has repairable panels. then practice on that. if you paintit yourself you will get me satisfaction out of it. also if you cant do, you will have only painted a beater that did not turn out well, not your truck.....

£5000 UK ($10000) including frame off and de-rusting the cab. POR 15 all over the frame after straightening and then painting.

Now to decide on the colours.......

I did all the work myself with help from friends. If you can, build your self a booth and paint it yourself.

Jamerjoe - how much time did you spend doing it / money on it?

I didn’t really keep track of everything during the project. It’s been almost 2yrs, but that’s not working on everyday. For how much I spent, it’s hard to say. I paid about 100 bucks for a 1 qt. of paint and 250 for a gallon of clear. I went through about 4 or 5 qt. of paint and about a gallon and a haft of clear there was some redoes. Then spent a few hundred on supplies (sandpaper, tools, body filler) and paint booth.

Mine was $4200.00. I brought new doors, fenders, and tail gate to them because the originals had rust. I pulled the cladding off, the doors apart, the hood and front end off. Basically the only thing they had to pull off the truck was the roof rack.

$4200.00 got me a single stage paint job that looks nice. Minimal orange peel. New windshield, window tracks, window regulators/motors. I then had to put the truck back together myself. It's not a show vehicle but it looks nice even up close.

OMG...that is the most incredible flame job I have EVER seen. That blue is a fantastic contrast with black. You must get comments on it every time you take it out.

By the way........that pic is my new desktop image! Do you have a link to more pics?

Thanks for all the input, everyone! I kinda have an idea what to look for in a painter now, and can kinda expect what to pay. You know, I'm quite suprised at how many body shops won't do complete repaints. They don't even care what kind of vehicle it is. They just say "no completes".

Because there is so much more money in insurance jobs. I know two really good painters, one is hell when it comes to blending and puttiong colors combos to together and making it look killer. The other is hell with pinstriping and airbrushing. Both have done work for me and both of them only do custom jobs to break up the day in day out of putting back to stock. That is what I see around here.
