Torsion Bars

I just purchased a 1988 GMC Jimmy 4x4. It has 151,000 miles on it. It's no Typhoon or Syclone. I just found out that the cv boots are torn and they need to be replaced, and perhaps even more. That's more then i can handle, but also found out that the torsion bar support mounts are busted. This i should be able to do, but I can't find the parts. They have been discontinued from the dealer as well. I would like to purchase new ones and I know they have to be out there somewhere. I don't want to pull them from the junkyard, but i will if i have to.
Also... does anyone work on these cars here in Illinois? I have some work that needs to be done on them and I hate paying Midas to fix it for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Torsion Bar Mount Part Numbers

GM #15958511
Moog #K6443
short studs Moog #K6485

For GM to say they are discontinued is BS. Give them the part number and they should have them - pretty common part. It will probably be cheaper to find the Moog ones - plus they have better construction.

Where in Illinois are you?

Which Moog mounts should I get for my Syclone - Moog #K6443 or short studs #K6485? What's the difference?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Well, the short studs make replacement MUCH easier in my opinion. What I have done in the past - before I knew of the short stud of which I haven't used yet - but will the next time - is hacked some of the length of the long stud kit off to make it easier to get into position.

If you are in Joliet - you SHOULD be able to get them from Car Quest. As far as a shop in Joliet - I don't really know of any off the top of my head but I am sure there are good shops in that area.

I noticed that you are from Naperville. I am currently in Naperville (work). Do you know of any shops around here? If you have AOL Instant Messenger, please contact me. My ID is ATJaguarX.

That part is not discontinued! It is still used today on the newer S-10 4X4's. In fact the whole frame has been the same since 81. they are $12.00 - $15.00 each new so don't be ripped off. Installation is easy and takes about an hour. While your at it you should re-index your adjuster keys for a 5-6 inch drop and get some 4 inch blocks for the back until you can afford to bag it with a 4 link.

What? I'm sorry. You'll have to excuse me. I am new to this whole 4wd thing.

You can find everything you'll wanna know about slamming a 4X4 Blazer, tucking 20's, laying the frame on the ground, even bagging it with the 4X4 stil in tact on:
http://www.BlazinLow.com
Check it out, that sight is full of slammers.
