TCI controller info

Just thought I would share some info on the TCI unit I found.

First even if you have the unit set up for no WOT TCC lock up it still locks up in 4th gear.

I have been haveing problems where when I did a run in OD the unit would skip 3rd gear and go to 4th. If I ran in Drive it would shift like it was supposed to and then I would manually shift to 4th. TCI said not to set the WOT shift rpms the same in each gear as it will confuse the unit. I have not has a chance to test it as I pulled the truck apart to get the TC adjusted. But thought I would pass on the info.

Thanks...I had mine all set the same.

BTW, having them all set the same wouldnt happen to confuse the unit even at part throttle would it?. I wouldnt think so but I noticed some weird behavior while messing with my truck today and if it does affect part throttle that may explain it.

Nope its only at WOT. If you are over the WOT tps setting you have the TCI unit ignors the part throttle tables and just looks at rpm. One thing to keep a eye on is WOT shift time. Book says min time is 0.5 sec if you leave it at the 1.0 time that is in the file they give you it takes forever and a 5500 rpm shift will be more like 5900.

You have to set it to 0.5 and make sure your wot shift rpms are lower than what you really want them to be. The other thing to keep in mind is as the turn the boost up it will go thru the rpm faster so you might have to turn the shift rpms down when you turn up the boost.

I figured as much but thought Id ask anyways.

Noticed this too. I never got to do much with WOT other than a couple of quick 60mph to 90mph blasts checking the down shift but I did do some manually shifted blasts from 2nd up through 3rd and found that the trans shifted quite a bit later than I had it programmed for.

Good info Nolan..thanks

David, is this that unit that you bought off of another board member or was this a new one? I'm wondering if there was something wrong with it to begin with. Not the shifting part, but the leave you stranded have to hit it with a sledghammer to get it going part. Is TCI helping you in any way?

The unit I have is brand new out of the box. I got it through a group purchase on another forum and it was drop shipped from TCI.

As far as help is concerned the TCI tech line guys were super nice but beyond basic trouble shooting they have to pass you on to an engineer who obviously doesnt like to return voice mail messages. Since I wasnt getting any responce from engineer guy I called TCI back and they put me in touch with the guy that actually does the warranty/repair work in Memphis, TN. The guy in TN is employed by FAST since thats who handles the repairs and Ive got a return authorization to send the unit in to him but havent had time to yank it out and box it up.

So, to answer your question TCI's tech line has been helpful/nice guys as well as the repair tech at FAST. TCI's engineer(s) have not been any help (hey, theyre engineers so mastering telephone operation is prolly a challenge ;) ) and the "tech" guy that was at the TCI booth when the power tour stopped here was not only unhelpful but semi snotty.
