Sy and Ty Transfer Case - side by side comparison (photos)

We started by taking the transfer case apart on the Ty first before taking the trans out etc. The transfer case had normal junk etc. inside. I thought George Blake said that the viscous clutch will be blue when it's bad or do the bind-on-dry-road thing. I dont want to put a ton in this truck, the clutch is not blue and it also does not bind when turning etc.

EDIT: Made this a sticky for reference. Will add to it. Any suggestions for content?

Here is what I found

Here is the Sy case on top and Ty on the bottom; see the length difference.

the damn u joints are different from the sy and ty ughh need to change the tailshaft,so it needs to come apart anyways.refund? lol

The difference is the drive shaft yokes. I don't recall that the u-joint itself is different. Swap the yoke, and call it done.

Left Ty and right Sy notice the length difference.I pulled out the Sy yoke so you could see the difference.

All I can say I know you guys are saying the joints are the same size etc, this is only what I found.

Also Sy and Ty have 4 gear planets, not 3 and 4 like some thought.

Re: transfer case clutch

the U joints may be different, im not sure, but if you have a ty with a sy transfer case or the other way around, you will need the yoke from the doaner wether sy or ty. different spline count, the ty is beefier.

I was able to take my sy drive shaft to the shop with a ty yoke and got a u joint put in with no problems.

maybe I have the wrong yoke?it does fit the splines but i checked on my sy and the joints seem to be the same size as the ty,maybe i have a stock s10 shaft?are the sy yokes special does anyone know?

Nothing special about the yokes. Just the ty is beefier with more splines 32 to 27 I think. I had a tranny shop change mine with no problem when I switched to Ty transfer case.:2cents:

32 spline is a turbo 400 yoke.

Re: transfer case clutch

There are "problem solver" U-joints available that have two different sizes of 'cups' on the same u-joint. Perhaps one of these will solve your problem, if you indeed have different size yoke and driveshaft 'holes'. Take the joints from both, and a set of calipers to an old-school parts store and ask for the book. These u-joints are listed by size in the rear of the catalog.

Takes some time to obtain a part that will work, but it can be done.

Re: transfer case clutch

In this pic, the yokes are obviously different, but the u-joints still look the same, and scale the same too. There is only one PN listed for all 91-94 S/T rear shaft u-joints applications. (Other than 5-speed manual trans) 26042371.

Are you using the definition "U-joint" for the "yoke"? If so, that is what is causing the confusion. If not, something on your truck has been changed. The u-joints are interchangeable on stock Typhoons and Syclones.

dave that u-joint is a very popular item. when most of the 4x4 guys are swapping out trannies froma turbo350 to a 400 or a 700r4/4l60 to an 80e

the yoke and the drive shaft combo is not the same nor is the u-joints.

there is that special u joint that has the offset cups on it the part # is a 3-3130 from advance auto.

Re: NOW WITH PICS syty t case specs!!

Re: NOW WITH PICS syty t case specs!!

The tailhousings and yokes are different. Everything from the tailhousing mounting surface forward should be exactly the same dimensions. That's why they have different PN's also. Because they're not the same exact t-case. That's one of the first things I learned about syty's.

Re: NOW WITH PICS syty xcase side by side comparison

found this out the hard way, my sy has a ty transfer case, and the prev owner had a CF driveline built and did not pay attention to this so i have a CF driveline but it's for the th350 style shorter and smaller spline yoke and not the th400 bigger and longer yoke like ty's have.

so i guess if i wanted to use this driveline i would have to swap tailshafts

Good info . I wonder what the differance is on the drive chain from a SY/TY to Astro /Safari ?
