reasons why 6-speed swap is bad?

anyone wanna refresh my memory??
is it just cause we cant shift fast enough?
is it the stock wastegate problem?
is it the fitting of a 6-speed in the frame?


...sorry, this automatic tranny crap is getting to me. I just need a refresher or reasons why the 6-speed wont work... otherwise I'm doing it :grin:

Do it and you'll regret ever making that decision.

- I don't know of anyone that makes a 4wd/awd adapter for the 6 speeds, there was never such an animal from the factory.

- Clutches will be destroyed. Yes there are some heavy duty ones out there, but a setup w/o wheelspin like the AWD system will require an all out race unit. Not cheap, not a very comfortable clutch.

-Look at the manual turbo cars out there. AWD DSM's go thru trannies like water. RWD Supras with 6 speeds are much slower than their auto equivalents.

-You will lose boost on the shifts, I don't care how many, or what kind of BOV you run.

-If you do ever use a 6 speed for any app, NEVER EVER use one from an LS1. They are the weakest, most unreliable design, and could even kill you (IMO). Ideal one would be a 93-94 with the better gear ratios, from an LT1, which had a stronger design.

-By the time you go thru all the expenses, you could probably have spent the money on a 4L80E setup.

I have no gripes with the 4L60 setup, worked well for me.

starting to see the light.... but auto tranny still making me sad :sad:

I just called my tranny shop to see if they had any ideas or if i should bring it in for a checkup.... well, it doesnt matter, cause they DONT EXIST ANYMORE!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....

There are some posts from Hartman in there that will give you more than enough reasons to leave it alone.

If you want DSM AWD shitbox reliability - by all means, do it. :smile:

Yea, heres an idea, get the 5 speed Allison automatic in the new HDs. That thing has gotta be bulletproof, and you'll be able to do some serious engine braking, for those long downhills towing a trailer. :smile:
