Look in the banner at the top of the page. To the right, you'll see your log-in name. To the right of that is an envelope. Click on that, then click on "show all", it opens your PMs.
To send a PM to a member that is in a thread you're viewing: Put your cursor over their screen name. A menu opens, click on "Start Conversation".
In the new-speak of the update, "Conversation" is a PM. "Message" is a post in a thread.
