Need some advice, downpipe,turbo, injectors?

First off I am a new member here, so thanks for having me. My past builds were a 76 Firebird, 79 and 81 Camaro, and more recently sinned with an 88 mustang. All V8's, all naturally aspirated, only the mustang had fuel injection which was a good learning curve.

To the new project, 1999 S10 Chevy Xtreme 4.3 2wd 5spd. In great condition, Looks great runs great, but has one major problem!!!!!! All vehicles listed above had in excess of 300 to 400 horsepower. 190 horsepower doesn't cut it lol!

So I have spent months, and months reading. Supercharger, front mount turbo, rear mount turbo, parts are expensive and hard to come by. Wanted to go rear mount turbo cause of costs involved and ease of getting parts but I have ground clearance issues since my truck has been lowered. Didn't want to run a charge pipe over my roof lol!

So as I read over the months I have acquired some parts. Marine intake manifold, and syty exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe. Hptuners on order!

Goal: Fun sunday city driver, no race tracks for this toy. Since there are no tracks around this city of 1.4 million people, Unbelievable lol! I would say I would like 300 hp and gobs of low end torque with very little turbo lag.

So What turbo would you recommend? What injectors would you recommend, 36lbs would probably suffice but I like added security with 42lbs. Downpipe? 2wd truck, hear the stock downpipe wont fit? Solutions?

As for budget? Cheaper is better but......I don't want to be doing things twice cause I was being cheap. No Ebay turbo's lol!!!!!

Help is appreciated!

Welcome to the forum. You might not get a really warm welcome from some guys because it isn't a SyTy but there are some really knowledgeable guys on here so hopefully you can get pointed in the right direction with your build.

As far as what set up you need it really depends on your budget and the limitations of your creativity. You will have to fab a few things here and there but if you are using the SyTy manifolds you have a lot of options that will bolt on (sorta). I just bought a Garrett 60-1 that will go on my Vortec head 4.3 with 60# injectors and meth. I am hoping to get low 12s/high 11s. There are guys running 20g turbos as a middle ground for street and strip performance. 63mm, 76mm, 66mm and anything else you can think of is being used around here. It is hard to say "build it with x,y and z" because there is a lot of approaches you can take. I know that doesn't exactly answer your questions but if you start reading there is a ton of info on here on different set ups and options so it should get you going.

Re: Need some advice, downpipe, turbo, injectors?

Thanks for the response. As for my vehicle not being a Syclone or a Typhoon? I honestly did not really know they existed, I mean I heard rumors for years, but never actually saw one. That's growing up in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon. I'm 41 years old now and till this day I never recall ever seeing one. Very very rare vehicles they are. My truck is a 1999 S10 Xtreme, and I gotta tell you I don't recall seeing any of them either. I am sure they exist, but not many around these parts.

Saw the add, saw the picture of the truck, sold. Unique, different etc etc. Maybe I don't hang out in the right circles lol. Yet I do appreciate looks of a vehicle and performance. If I could of found a Syclone I would of bought a Syclone. Whats a man to do? Sorry I sinned with an S10 Xtreme that is not a Syclone, bigger sin though in my mind was having an 88 mustang (Ford) lol! Went like snot after mods but still looked like a ford tempo!

As for Turbo choices I have read read and read lol, for 6 months plus, 20G seems like a very popular choice. Might be more than I am looking for though. Again bare with me I am a turbo noob.

Any help members can offer me is great. If any member lives around Calgary I would love to see their ride! Then I can say they Syclones do exist and its not just a youtube myth lol!

Just pick up a SyTy stock turbo, it's small and still makes good power for what it is. It will get you to the 300hp you want. You can take it a step more and get the billet compressor wheel from Sportmachines and have a more efficient turbo.

Re: Need some advice, downpipe, turbo, injectors?

I would do at least 42# injectors; i would choose 60# injectors just because they seem to be easier to tune. As for a turbo I would do something along the line of a 20g (10cm2 or 12cm2 exhaust housing) for a budget build. You can buy a stock SyTy downpipe and have an exhaust shop modify that to fit. A stock 17c turbo is going to be real easy to max out with your 99 Vortec heads and better stock Vortec cam.

One problem your going to issue traction issues with all that torque and a rwd pickup.

I know we have some in Canada. I am sure you can get with one of them at a meet up. It is rare to see a Sy or Ty in person. I have seen two of them in my life, the one I own and a random one on a trailer on the highway one day.

Re: Need some advice, downpipe, turbo, injectors?

Thanks again guys. 20G it will be. Never thought about the flow rates of the Vortec heads, so yah they could use more air than the original syty turbo.

Glad to hear the stock downpipe can be modded to fit.

Do have a question about 60lbs injectors being easier to tune than 42lbs injectors? I don't get it, why? Would the 42's be close to maxing out? Is that why? Bare with me, trying to get the right parts and not do things twice.

As for traction issues lol!!!!!!!!!! Not gonna be a drag racing truck, just a fun weekend cruiser. I don't need the vehicle to hook up. She's got 18s on her though and a wide footprint. Don't mind a vehicle going a little bit sideways on me lol. If the truck ever sees a track it would be like once or twice.

Gotta tell you all I am not a truck fan, or at least wasn't. You just cant get performance out of a truck lol! Ignorance is bliss! Like I said before I have been reading for 6 months plus, cant believe how wild these trucks can get. 14's for a truck is awesome in my world, some of you guys though just blow me away (11's). I would be the guy in a modified Camaro Firebird or Mustang, wondering what the hell just happened as I lost a race to a truck lol! How did that happen? Lots of awesome rides here.

Thank guys for trying to help me get my truck to run as well as it looks.
