Napa has been slowly getting worse and worse. Im not that old but i remember when i was a kid my dad went to napa for everything.... even a bearing for a blower motor for our home heater... went in with the bearing... guy got a calliper out and measured it and grabbed him one. Although napas are marginally better than advance and autozone... the 2 closest napas to me have closed in the past few years.
Pricing also makes no sense... did new callipers and hoses on a wrangler this weekend... advance hit us for 26$ per brake hose... but only 12$ per calliper... made
no sense
Get all your shit from NAPA. They got good stuff.
I own a shop and in the past 2 years my comebacks have been getting more frequent... not comebacks as in oh you didnt fix it... as in i replace a tie rod and 10 months later its falling off again. As much as i think americans manufacture some of the highest quality stuff in the world... china has the same abilities to do the same work. Most parts of a GM car are manufactured in mexico, south america, and asia- the quality is there because general motors demands it.
The american consumer wants to cheapest part possible to put in their car. Take a tie rod end for a 2001 impala. The delear wanted 71$. Advance auto priced a moog one at 80$. Advance had their white box brand priced at 16$. Most people figure... well if a national chain sells it it must be good enough and buy the cheapest part. Ill bet the Gm, moog, and whitebox are all made over seas, they just save a few dollars on manufacturing a shittier part, and try to sell large quantities of them to make the money.
Completely avoid the Vatozones in Anaheim at all costs then! I absolutely hate going down to any of them.OK here's another aspect of the parts situation. Personnel in the retail outlets.
I have two NAPA stories. My local (Hawthorne CA) NAPA is staffed by Hispanics. They speak Spanish to each other, ignore in-store customers, answer the phones while in the middle of a transaction with a counter customer, and are generally rude and disinterested in helping you get the parts you need to solve your problem. Especially if you're a White guy or don't speak Spanish. I watched how they treated other people, and it was obvious they preferred to deal with other Hispanics. After 6 months of this, having never bitched, asked for a discount, or quibbled about price, I'd had enough. After about 45 minutes of waiting and hassle getting my shit pulled and rung up, there was some disagreement about the billing. I said to the guy I'd received the most attitude from "You really have a problem with White People doing business here, don't you? Well kiss my White ass good-by. I'll never be back". I left my shit on the counter, and walked out.
For 10 years I spent 2-3 weeks each January in Ft. Lauderdale working on a west coast client's east coast boat. I obtained a lot of my parts and supplies from the local NAPA on Federal Highway. BIG contrast to my local store Hispanics. These guys were helpful, courteous, and accommodating to my needs and requests. This has been my experience in NAPA's all over the country. Knowledgeable, friendly, courteous, usually white guys that want to help me solve my problem. The guys at the NAPA in Portland Maine came out to check out the Typhoon when I drove up. They had never seen one, but knew what it was.
I've never had a concern with the quality of NAPA parts, the prices were reasonable, and delivery times were acceptable. As a white guy, I live in the wrong state to expect much courtesy from the predominate race in my native community.
You can always buy German I guess.
I never rely on the counterman to find the correct parts for me. 99% of the time I research the part(s) online to make sure they are correct. Then I use the parts stores' websites to place an order using 35% or 40% off coupons. The counterman is simply there to clerk my order when I show up to pick it up.

That's what I do.
x3, although the guys at my local Napa know me pretty well so if its something I can't find and I ask them if it exists, they usually know of can point me in another direction.
If you regularly shop at a Napa, I would recommend talking to the owner about setting up an account. That will bring the prices more in line with some of the other retailers.
I just did a tune up on a MB g550.... 16 spark plugs- 585$ wire set..... 900$ just to replace plugs and wires. Almost 600$ for 16 short oil near plug plug wires
