Fuel gauge incorrectly reading

Noticed my fuel level is pegged full, and I believe there's less then advertised inside the tank. Is there any common fix or problem that could go wrong?

Bad sending unit? Has that been replaced recently?
No. Been in there for awhile. Worked before.

Put fuel in the truck and gauge went all the way full. I'm not sure if it's even anywhere near full. Just kind of a concern if I got for a quick spin.

Not sure if it's grounding related, or just Kaputt.

I replaced the fuel pump 10 years ago +- and added a hotwire in between the years. I had some issues early on with stuff not really grounding out well and being intermittent. I had the tank out many times because of the wire issues with racetronix kit. I believe it was a ground lug I didn't put on specifically for the hotwire, and now I'm suspecting the gray/purple wire arent they in correlation with the sending unit. I can't see the unit inside tank being bad, unless it's stuck or jammed? How's that even possible.

If I can when I get home I can take a picture of the the fuel level sensor thats attached to the fuel sending assembly. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Potentiometers? Our fuel level sensor works similar to a potentiometer. There is a wiper that runs over the resistance wire, that then takes the position of the wiper placement on the resistance wire to measure the relative amount of fuel in the tank. If the wiper blade on your fuel assembly is weak or broken, it often measures the fuel amount lower or higher, than it actually is. When I removed my OEM/old assembly from the fuel tank, mine was super weak and brittle. So if you replaced the Fuel sending assembly I'd assume that's not your problem in this case.

I just had the tank up and down a few times when I was working on the system.

I think I had intermittent connection and no ground the first time upon installing the hotwire. There's a ground lug they give you. .. , had to re-remove the tank to troubleshoot and ground everything out. Then I noticed the tank fill vent was not on and I had to re-drop the tank once again. It's a small hose connected to the side of the actual fuel fill er hose located from the fuel door to tank.

Yesterday I was able to turn the key and for some reason, it actually went down and showed I had a half of a tank. After cycling it twice I ended up putting some fuel in the truck that I had in a can. Seemed like after putting the fuel in it, it stopped working again.

Seems like a intermittent issue. As it wasn't working, worked...and didn't work after I put fuel inside tank.

Are there any other suggestions- ?

Gauges seem to start to function. Fuel gauge level off at a half tank. Was wondering if the factory temp gauge was connecting and I removed the single wire connector and re plugged it back in. When I had the KOEO I saw movement on the needle. I guess temp gauge is so inaccurate it doesn't read right? Truck was 150-160* on my other gauge. Just good to know things are working for now.
