ok- first off, the disclaimer: NO FLAMES!! no I'm not permanently going 2wd.

this story goes something like this: 1. boy removes front diff & axles in an attempt to rebuild and/or replace as needed. 2. While parts are out, boy moves vehicle under its own power (anybody throwing anything at their screens yet??) out into the driveway for a fabulous day of working on the truck in the sunshine. 3. upon attempting to replace vehicle into the garage later that nite, boy hears a clunking/knocking and feels jerking from front suspension. 4. upon closer inspection, passenger side hub has completely separated into 2 halves. Which brings us to my question:

uhh... what the hell...??

you have to rreinstall the axle studs or that is what is goin to happen. the axle stubs keep the hub together.

You're actually lucky that the hubs didn't come apart enough to really do some damage. You want to make sure all the bearings, hubs and seals are still ok. Check them out real closely and if then nothing seems wrong, then put it all back together and tighten those axle nuts down HARD. I think that the specs are around 180 ft/lbs. Good luck

axle... stubs...? So just break the axles down at the outer cv's and leave the outer stub in the hub?

Yeah got that right- I could've been haulin arse on the freeway, instead I was just trying to move it around in the driveway! Actually I don't think I would've been dumb enuff to go flyin around with the frontend like that (I hope)...
But I can just put whats left of the hub back together without having to get new hubs?

You should try going 45 mph when that happens!

My entire driver side wheel came off 5 minutes after taking the diff out. Ended up costing me $65 for a hub at the yard, and $30 for a lower ball joint. It's easy as hell to take out the oil pan now, that was the main reason to do it. I thought the weight would help the MPG, but haven't found much improvement.

4WD sucks, I say go for it. I wanna say 11 second bone stock Typhoon, minor conversion required. Maybe next year.

,,,sweet merciful crap. That's exactly what scared the sh*t out of me when it happened to mine- I could've been out on the road haulin ass at like 70 on the freeway. Do you still have your stock t-case in there? I would think it would burn up after awhile with no front drive connected...? Did you just do the axle stub trick on yours to keep the hub from separating?

My fun was in my 91 4x4 Blazer. Same shit though.

Yes, I did install the stubs to hold it all together. I will say this, it really wasn't my fault. I was told to do this, and let my father argue with me to do it his way. His way sucked, and could have killed me in another 5 minutes. I was on my way to the freeway, where I would have been 70mph instead of the measly 45. Needless to say, he came and got me and paid for it all.
