Re: Alternator recommendation

Damn all I did was have my stock unit rebuit into an 140 amp...EZ as pie.
Im also running the small 15lbs battery with an under drive pulley and electric fans.

I don't have time to take out my alt. Its my dd until my car gets some wheel studs put on it after an idiot did my tire repair and didn't tighten my lugs all the way... How much was a conversion on a stocker to 140a anyways? Just curious...

Thanks Aaron

Re: Alternator recommendation

Which bracket hole needs to be enlarged? Anyone have any pics of this?

Re: Alternator recommendation

The stock CS130 has a threaded hole (5/16ths?) bottom left looking at the alternator from the front. When you're running the stock alternator you put the bolt through the bracket and then it screws into the alternator itself. When you swap over to the CS144, the alternator doesn't have a threaded hole.

You drill out the bracket a little larger (7/16ths?) to match the new alternator and then bolt (3/8ths?) through to a nut in order to secure it.

Re: Alternator recommendation

Here's what I just ordered http://www.powerbastards.com/proddetail.asp?prod=7981-7-220&cat=125924 220 amp stock looking alternator @ 1200 RPM They're not cheap but will be awesome for future electrical upgrades
I burnt this one up with running a 1400 watt amp and pulling over 100 amps for long periods of time. I also didn't upgrade my ground so that helped kill it. I sent it back within the year warranty and They sent me a new one with a note stating " if you're going to run over 100 amps constantly you're gonna need another alternator and another battery " So for now I got one from the bone yard for a suburban AND it takes whatever I throw at it. I still have the new Power Bastard and I'm debating finding a bracket for 2 alternators or getting one of those big bad boy alternators a few of yall run.

Re: Alternator recommendation

The bearing is howling like a mad man... Just got got home and opened the hood...I love this brand new alt and the bearing is already howling....wtf...I guess it was just my turn with a failed part right out of the box. I'm going to 're-do my alt grounds tomorrow... Go to a larger wire right to the frame or the battery...I'll say this the hole on the left side of the bracket at the front of the truck needs to be massaged more than 3/8 of an inch...anyone going to do this hole upgrade feel free to contact me and I'll help you with any questions even if your a newbie...lmk

Re: Alternator recommendation

Ya I found one and cut the 3/8 bit down too about half its size....it's not exactly 3/8 either...so I just elongated/massaged the hole more and cut off the head of the bracket that goes down to the manifold and power steering pump. If you need anything let me know....I won't insult you if you have a ? Either....:-D

Re: Alternator recommendation

No troubles at all. I did the same thing you did, including cutting the bit down about an inch and a half. I also took the upper fan shroud off for more clearance, used a right angle drill, opened the hole up, and then used the side of the drill bit to elongate the hole some. Worked great. I'm going to upgrade the charge wire to a 4ga one, but I'm not sure which route the OE one takes, as I'd like to follow the same route with the new one. It's been wicked cold here the last few days, so I haven't looked at it since the alternator install. So far, not one dimming light issue like I was having with my failing C130 alt.

Re: Alternator recommendation

It's alittle late for that now isn't it Dave P. Don't you think, after most of us have altered our brackets....but thanks for the input for future ref.

I read a test years ago comparing different types of flex fans, best was the stainless type,

The worst power robbing, HP stealing fans were the plastic flex fans. Not sure that is what you have?
