2000 Vortec 4.3

Okay I can get a whole 2000 4.3 for 500 with 6k miles on it. I think I'm gonna get it for the heads. Now I'm wondering if I can use the block to start building a spare motor, what is the difference in the two blocks.

500.00 is way too much money if you just want it for the heads...i'm pretty sure the 96+ blocks are almost useless to a syty....if i'm wrong, someone will chime in here and correct me really quick :) you can get used vortec heads for around 50 dollars a piece all day long at a junkyard ...

The balance shaft motors have been used in a SyTy application. Dave Buckshaw used one and was pushing +/- 450hp. Waller or Hood was using one also - don't remember who.

What I am told is the balance shaft will produce a smoother idle. You'll have to change pistons to a lower compression ratio if you're wanting to use it as it sits. Dunno if these use L35 rods or not - but they are a good slightly better than stock replacement.

The price doesn't seem bad as there are usable parts on it. I don't know that I'd use it in a high HP build - but it could be for a stockish motor. I had the opportunity to get a balance shaft motor for free - I'm not sure what direction I'm going with my build at this time. Do a search here for balance shaft - there is good info.

the motor for my sy is a 4-bolted balance shaft block...the cam and timing set are expensive...there's not a double roller set available for them but there is a single cloyes true roller...that alone cost me 150.00 and the cam is different so one would have to be custom ground... everything else was the same...shouldn't be any weaker...the bottom end is the same as a regular block, and thats where you need the strength IMO...

i was under the impression that the 96+ blocks had differences other than the shaft....i guess not...
