When to upgrade fuel injectors?

I need to buy a new fuel pump because my stock one isn't doing it since I bought a new engine, 20G Turbo, and 2600 TC.

I don't plan to race any time soon...
I have lots of things to fix first >.>

At what point do you need to upgrade your fuel injectors?

I still have a lot to learn about cars in general so please keep that in mind when explaining things.

Thanks in advance XD

when the get to be running over 80% or you could toss on 50lb inj and without going crazy on stuff that get you to the 500hp rang

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

You should go with a Walbro 255. I have the same mods on my daily driver Sy and I think it will work great. It takes a novice mechanic about 3hrs start to fish to complete the swap, make sure you soak the mounting strap bolts for the gas tank in deep creep a couple days before About 3 or4 times). Oh yeah and it's much easier to do with an empty tank. Your injectors will be fine up to at least 350hp, I believe. Do include in your build an AFPR, so that you can adjust fuel pressure for more boost. Good luck with the build and make sure you take good pics.

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

You don't adjust fuel pressure for more boost - the AFPR does that - if your stock FP is 42 psi (which it should be) then your AFPR will add that to the manifold psi.

If you are at 10 psi then your AFPR will give you 52 psi.

People have mistakenly adjusted their idle AFPR and had problems in the past.

The benefit of a new AFPR is that they are less likely to cause you problems with perished/broken diapragms like the stock ones that are now 15 years old if original.

If you are running a 20G are you planning in running more boost? Got the 3 bar MAP yet?

If you get the Walbro 255 then you should prob get a Racetronix wiring harness so as not to overload the fuse or cause a voltage drop across the truck. This could cause you a tuning nightmare....

Duh...... 3 bar map, that was the other thing I was thinking about and couldn't remember.

Quick, I don't know about the Racetronix harness, Where do I get one and how much do they run. Is it easy to install when you do the the new fuel pump?

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

I think one of the vendors on here sells them - google it and it was pretty easy otherwise I think maybe Detroit Turbo?

I have one in the garage and it looks pretty simple - thicker cabling straight to the alternator with a relay so it turns on when the ignition is applied.

Where did you get your FP? If you got a Walbro kit then you might need a pigtail for the stock fuel pump as the connector blades are different.

Depending on the age of your tank etc, the assembly for the pump might be corroded in which case you'll need a new one. They're $50 or so and the locking ring as well is about $6. See where you get first.

As for the 3 bar MAP, you then need to start looking at the tune as well - there isn't a halfway with these trucks once you get started!! :D

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

If you don't know that much about fixing vehicles in general, SLOW DOWN!!!! You will only end up blowing it up again. Fix it and drive it, then when you are VERY comfortable with it, then go for broke.......:2cents:

Didn't plan to adjust the boost any time soon.

Looking at the kit from Detroit Turbo for the walbro 225.

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

many trucks have gone low 12s with stock injectors. Syclone's dipping into the 11s.

all depends how efficient your motor is, and how much boost you are able to run. Pump gas 15-16psi will take a pretty decent turbo to need larger injectors. Race gas with 25psi and you will see duty cycles climbing pretty high even with a stock turbo.

Re: When to upgrade fuel injectors?

I just finished installing my new 255 today which I purchased from Mike at RPM. Pig tail and all necessary items were provided. I also ordered the Racetronic hot wire kit but did not have time to install it. It looks pretty easy to install though. The pump swap was not fun (my first time).
