Boost Launch/Track Run 2008

Ok, I know there are a few topics on the board on how to do a Boost Launch (Todd. A. Maneuver) However, the correct information is buried a few pages deep into these topics... some even have false info, like shifting into OD at launch (dont do this)

So I figured I'd put it right in everyone's face, for the new guys, or for those who never really got it...

1) When you're ready to go/are staged. put the truck in NEUTRAL.
2) Put your foot on the brake, and push it down VERY HARD
3) While holding down the brake, rev on the gas pedal to around 3500-4000rpm a couple times. This will create vacuum pressure, and will allow the brake pedal to sink a few inches further (usually to the floor) for a better hold.
4) While holding, slowly get on the gas to build boost pressure
5) Watch your boost gauge (your aftermarket one is better if you have one) When it gets to around 5PSI or a bit over (don't go too high or you will break your propshaft) Let off the brake while simultaneously flooring the gas.

Ok so now you're out of the hole nice and quick... remember, you're still in D. As you go through the gears, you're going to get to around the 50-60mph area and need to shift up into OD... The best time, from what I've noticed is at 4,000 RPM on the dot. You don't need to press the button, just bump it up (not too hard or you'll find yourself in Neutral)

Congratulations! Pat yourself on the back! Make note of what vehicle was in the other lane, and jot it down in the Sy/Ty Kills section of this forum!

NOTE!: If you have a stock chip, it won't let you build maximum boost right when you turn the truck on...you need to give it a quick few revs to take care of that!

I'm pretty sure I got it all covered, Let me know if I forgot anything...

3a) Let RPMs drop back to 0rpms BEFORE shifting into D

Re: Boost Launch/Track Run 2008

Thanks for digging this out for us new guys. Whats the reason behind using D until 60ish and then shifting into OD?

Good info, I would also like to know about the locking torq converter. Is this something you should have locked or unlocked? I have a 9.5 L/U torq convertor.

In D, the trans has higher line pressure.

Ive heard it various ways... shift into OD mid track, shift into OD as you break the beam at the top end. Lock the TC with a paperclip before you stage...... Ive never ran in D and shifted into OD, Ive always just kept it in OD and have never prelocked the TC.

In the end, try whichever method and the one that nets you the best results, stick with it. Everyone's truck is different.

1. would the truck run out of RPM if you dont shift it into OD?

2. i know that a TH350 TH400 dont have the taller first gears our 700's have. but would that makes the truck run out of RPM on the big end?

3. why cant you manualy shift the gears? 1-2-3?

You can. You'd have to be pretty dang quick to do the 1-2 without bumping a limiter.

You can run into a rev limiter running through the traps in D, depending on where your rev limiter was set to.

I picked up MPH shifting to OD in a stockish truck. Like Adam said, different builds will respond differently to shift points and lockup.

Re: Boost Launch/Track Run 2008

Whoa.. wait... what are we locking up with a paperclip? Hmm... Maybe I AM Missing something? I'm completely lost on this.....

Also, the 1,2,3 shifting... I'm just not comfortable with, and honestly, I don't remember where, but I think it was George who mentioned to NEVER do that...?

The reason I use D then OD at around the 60'ish mark (4k RPM in w/e gear that is) is because my truck pulls the hardest that way... If I do it any other way, it's just an obviously slower feeling experience....

Another reason for not 1,2,3 shifting is my transmission... the 1-2 shift is so hard it could give you whiplash...:squint: As for the rest of the shift points...well...not so good either...

I can't wait to afford a George Blake 700R4... then I wont have to worry about Dynotech's Timebomb Surprise...

Using a paperclip jumper in the ALDL to force the converter to lock as soon as it shifts into 2nd, jump terminals A&F, upper right and upper left. And if you like it you can set up a switch for it.
Some have seen better times and mph at the track using it.

Re: Boost Launch/Track Run 2008

big turbo's don't like OD. i shift into OD at 4-5K rpm, otherwise the turbo won''t spool
