need pic of installed rpm headers

installed mine and they rub on the upper steering shaft coming out of the fire wall. ill try to post a pic if i can. also what all did you have to modify to get them to fit, tranny lines, oil cooler lines, etc.......

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

You need RPM's steering shaft to clear the primaries.
And also recommended you have solid motor mounts.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

i have the rpm shaft and also have solid motor mounts. its not the actual shaft thats hitting the tube its the sleeve coming out of the fire wall that the shaft slides up into.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

Its possible the frame pad is sitting too high on the driver side? Its definitely gonna be close (approx ~ 1/4" clearance) but this is the first set i have seen with this particular problem. One reason we went to the 3/4"dd shaft to slide inside the column instead of the 1" dd which would slide over. Just gives a little extra clearance with 1.625 and 1.75" primaries. Send some pics and i'll try to offer some suggestions.. has the truck ever been in an accident?

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

it has been hit in the passenger side headlight and fender. hit a fullsize truck in the rear. but no contact with the bumper or frame. just pushed in the headlilght and quarter panel, hood. didnt get into radiator or anything. i may email you pics or get wyosyclone to post them in this thread for me tomorrow. it has solid mounts and turbotime frame pads. i could possibly loosen the drivers pad from the frame a little and try to slide it forward a little but want the motor/tranny to be square

Seen it with my own to eyes after 2 hours of motor fighting the motor into place

Mike how much adjusmtent is on the solid mount plate to frame???

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

rob and troy put the frame pads on and i thought they could go forward and back but not up or down. anybody know.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

These are pics of Syclone0209's interference issue with the steering shaft, and the clearance on the passenger side. The Morosso mounts have about 1/2" adjustment on the driver's side if I remember correctly, but little or none on the passenger's side due to one hole just being a hole, not slotted.

thanks rob, the passenger side to frame is close but not an issue i dont think but the steering shaft is. i like the pointers rob, thanks....

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

is the column actually touching the header tube? in the pics it looks like you can see light b/t the two. Our shaft goes inside the column so as long as it clears you are fine. As for the frame pads, i would check with Turbo Time on them. Ours may be slightly different even though they are both designed to use the same SBC motor mount.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

what do you think mike? can you give me what the measurement from the inside of the header flange to the outside of the # 5 header tube should be.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

Mine clears fine up at the top, but there's only a few mm of clearance between the lower joint and the header. It's almost too close for comfort, but I have solid mounts so the motor's not going to move. Is a super tight fit, even more so on the passenger side. Here are some pics, maybe they will help you.

Yes when you turn the wheel it hits the tube. it shouldnt take much to clear but something somewhere is out.

And are those shafts listed on you new site?

Hey Mike,
In this install the steering shaft is actually just touching the header. You know how the steering shaft is actually a little rectangular? It touches with the short dimension facing the header. If one tried to turn the steering wheel it would actually not be able to turn, or would gouge out the header.

Re: need pic of installed rpm headers

i'll try and take a measurement tomorrow. Obviously this is one of the crucial points of the headers, and our fixture is designed so that the tube can only protrude out so far from the port. We originally ran the upper u joint that slid OVER the column and had the set screw. And it cleared. We haven't changed the design of the headers, so it should have ample clearance. We had some clearance issues with the "lower" u joint on several typhoons (no syclones) when using the bulky borgeson u joint, but by switching to the low profile flaming river i haven't seen any clearance issues steering shaft related since (with the exception of this).

I haven't seen the turbotime mounts, but it almost looks like the back of the motor is sitting higher.. maybe in the frame pad they eliminated the 7-8 deg taper that allows the rear of the motor to sag somewhat?.. hopefully we can narrow it down for you.
