Trans Temp Sensor Location

Has anyone put a trans temp gauge in their SyTy? Where is a good place to put the trans temp sensor? Normally I like to put one between the trans and the first cooler (usually the radiator), but IIRC it is all hard lines to that point. I guess I could rig up an adapter fitting...

Thanks,

Re: Trans Temp Sensor Location

It's easy to install a remote filter, and all of the ones I've seen have a port for a temp sender

Re: Trans Temp Sensor Location

You want to get the temps coming out of the trans before any coolers so you have a real clue as to what the INSIDE temp is.

I am not a big fan of taking them in the pan either because that is taking into account fresh fluid from the coolers.

The OUT line is right off the pump and is as hot as it gets.

My sender is in the remote filter setup, first stop out of the trans, then it goes on to the cooler(s). (same setup as above, AN lines, ext filter, ext cooler, stock cooler, back to trans)
I am bypassing my radiator cooling next time I change the fluid.
I think the large plate coolers (B&M) do a much better job and the stock one just heats the fluid back up and or lowers the pressure/flow in the system.

I have mine mounted on the side of my trans, there's a plug on the driver side by the prop shaft,it's a 1/8npt plug. I took out the plug and the sensor screwed right in.I'll get a pic of it up tomorrow if you want to see where i got it.

Yep, that's where I have had mine for the past eight years:

Syclone'D916 what are your typical trans temps at cruise and at the end of a quarter mile, with the sender in that location?

Re: Trans Temp Sensor Location

That would be an outstand spot to put a PRESSURE gauge.

The outlet lube line coming off the case is the best for seeing what your torque converter is going through. The LAST thing the fluid hits before coming out is the TC and that is where 80% of the heat is generated. (20% is from the band and the 3-4 clutches). You need it on that outlet line because you can see instantly what has happened inside(while your staging) and the fluid is CONSTANTLY being refreshed. The pressure port is very static. If you follow it up in the case you can see it's kind of a dead end. It will work. You will get heat and the fluid does move, it's just gonna be a while before you see what's happened and by then you've probably already done the damage. I would really recommend putting a pressure gauge. Not to sound like a broken record but a pressure gauge is MUCH more beneficial than a temp gauge. But if you had one of those gauges like Mike has, it can display BOTH at the same time.

Re: Trans Temp Sensor Location

Temp at cruise is just under 150,have not done a quarter mile past yet since i got my trans rebuilt. But when i get on it,just past 150. Max i've seen was 170 about.
I thought about a pressure gauge. I plan on getting a different pan then do a swap, temp in pan pressure on top. To many dam gauges to mount.

Can you post some pictures i would love to see where you are talking about. I have the temp gauge in my POD but i never hooked it up becasue i wasnt sure where to.

thanks

Im gettin ready to do this also, and would love a pic that wasnt removed haha. I think i know what youre talking about.

Here it is on a 4l60E, Is that the same spot?

But i guess im sprining for more money to also get a pressure gauge lol. Thanks for the tip George.

Ya,been busy. But i'll take some pic's tonite and post some up.My tranny guy who rebuilt it told me that's were he put's them.I was going to put it in the pan,but it think it will read hotter there sitting in nice hot oil.
I've looked for a trans press guage,i don't think they make one.Only found a oil press guage that goes up to 0-200psi not to sure if ti will be in that pressure range??

and here a trans noob question. How do you read a temp pressure gauge? What is bad? to much pressure or to little. i.e. What is a safe trans pressure to race with and what is bad?

There are "drive oil" pressure guages. We use them in the yachts on big marine transmissions. Murphy, Stewart Warner, and AC Delco, and VDO are some of the ones we use.

You probably need 0-300 psi. I found in the Helms: full TV @1000RPM, in fwd=193-256. And full TV in Reverse @ 1000RPM=248-329psi.

Unless you're just 'nuts' for gauges, you might want to re-think the need for this. An electric sender won't fit directly on the case. It will need a hose/line. So will a mechanical gauge. If this hose fails, it could: make a big mess, burn up your trans, leave you stranded (no ATF in trans), or possibly start an oil-fire under the car.

I've found a pressure gauge to be indispensable when diagnosing transmission problems. Particularly TV-related issues. But I've never felt that transmission line pressure is something that needs to be continuously monitored once everything is sorted out.

I saw the VDO press gauge and sensor on Summit, the sensor is pretty big and looks like in will hit the prop shaft.I'm at my limit with gauges (4's enough) no room.

I'm getting 220 degree temps at this location just cruising around doing 60mph.I wonder if I ordered the wrong sensor for the gauge.

Re: Trans Temp Sensor Location

Talked to my tranny guy about the high temp...he said that sensor location does not circulate the fluid through it. This would explain the high temp reading.

If you're still looking for a handy way to hook up your temp sensor, I now have one!

Flyer2a.jpg

I'm the engineering manager at ISSPRO, and dreamed up this item so I could have an easy way to hook up the trans temp sensors.

We also have 400 psi drive oil pressure gauges, with a very compact electronic pressure sensor.
