whacko new sparkplugs

SyTyless......for now!
Got some new plugs for the Ty, and all that the parts store had was Autolite double platinums, so I took em. checked the gap, installed them and..... wierd stuff happened. Tach flutter like mad at idle, misfiring and stumbling thoughout all RPMs even after heating it up, the whole deal. All wires were correct, so I did some research. took off the cap, cleaned the contacts (good condition except for some green shit, sanded and WD-40'd it), and still bad. for shits and giggles I put in the old ones, which were still in good condition (Autolite Racing plugs), and it ran awesome! smooth as glass and ran strong.

So, here's the burning question: Could the racing plugs have a different heat range or resistance/operating value than the platinums? and why would the new plugs cause it to run so badly? Which ones are reccomended? I tried to get NGK Iridiums, but I would have had to order them and wait.

Re: whacko new sparkplugs

Use delcos, they work just fine.

If you get NGK dont bother with iridiums but if you really want them I could set you up with a brand new set cheap.

Stolen from other threads:

Don't run the RapidFire plugs or any other gimmick plug or platinum plug. The only acceptable plugs are (in order of preference):

NGK UR5 (stock heat range), UR6 (colder)
ACDelco CR42TS (factory plug, CR43TS is not an acceptable substitute)
Autolite 23's (similar to UR5/CR42TS)

I get the NGK's at the local large hardware/farm store, Summit also has them, or Michael Hood (sytyguy) who is really GREAT to order parts from!

Stock heads
UR5 - 2771 - $1.89 each
UR6 - 7773 - $1.89 each

Vortec heads
TR5 - 2238 - $1.89 each
TR55 - 3951 - $1.89 each
TR6 - 4177 - $1.89 each

Other plugs
Autolite 104 - $1.75 each
AC Delco CR42TS - $1.75 each

I don't stock or sell many of the 104s or CR42TSs, but I keep all NGKs in stock in great multitude. Contact me if you need to order anything.

Also, thanks for the kind words, Jason & Josh.

Re: whacko new sparkplugs

look at where the platinum "was" before you installed them.......betcha some pieces are missing on either side.

turbo and platinum dont mix,...period!

platinum plating on the end is gone VERY quick after boost.

Interesting what is quoted about the CR43's, I have used those instead of the 42's and they ran a lot better. Now I use the NGK's but just thought I'ld throw that out there.
